After a rain out last week, the day started with 50deg. weather and cloudy, track was prepped in top condition. The air was quite dry and very little wind, so I had made up my mind to kick some butt on the asphalt. After building a new 408 for the Maverick, Mavman was anxious to see how it would fair in cool weather. Since both of us are running alky with Ron's toilet injection(mine is 331ci), getting some heat in the engine was a bit lengthy but the air warmed to a comfortable 69deg and the track was hooking like never before. I had replaced all my valve springs a few weeks back and the season long abuse of the little 331, gives some apprehention as to "when she's gonna give up". The Maverick was awesome, cranking out consistent 6.02/3 1/8th mile runs and 7.74 1000ft @126mph(this track is one of the last to run 1000ft in street and Pro/NoE classes) My Fairmont was cranking out 6.79/80 1/8th and 8.76/7 1000ft @113mph. To summarize this long post, Mavman wins the event with a .517 RT and I go out in quarter finals, with a .494 red eye. Would have liked to run Mavman in the finals, will have to keep trying to get that task done before giving up the seat. Got the 347 short block done for the Mont, will save it for next season. Don't know if my 9in Mickey's will hold with it, getting 1.45 60ft's now with the 331. The other Maverick running with us in No/E, is #1 in points, with four more points races left. Have got some info, if anyone is interested, on some things I found out about assy. a 347 with a main stud girdle. Can post at a later date if you want. Also have a picture of myself and my youngest son, racing his last race, before deploying to Iraq, or some other sand dune in the east. All will come later, this post is waaay to long already but had to vent some joy and satisfaction, for a change.
Hey Dave... send me that pic of you and Jr please. Congrats to Mavman for winning and congrats to Dave for getting to the quarters
Good to hear you 2 did so well...we are supposed to get some of that kinda weather this coming weekend...can't wait. I went to the quarters myself Saturday, unfortunately it didn't earn me enuf points to qualify for bracket finals next month. I bet I claim all 10 races next year Dave if it's any consolation the guy that won TOP class at our track Sat. night turned 50 Sat. too...there is still hope for us Old Guys
you old guys make me laugh. glad i'm only going to be 60 next time around. wow! did i say that. glad to hear you had a great outing. i love it when things go right at the track. and it's always fun to look around toward the end and see how many grayhairs are still in. looking forward to seeing your posts on the 347 and also the pics of you and your son. and i'll say a prayer for his safety.
Sounds like another great time at the track (win or lose). Awesome ET's for both cars. I too am interested in the 347 with main stud girdle. That's my setup.
I thought I'd bring this thread back from "the dead".....a win is sweet, but 2 in a row is even sweeter. What's even nicer than that? I ran the same lane all day long until the final. Want more? The guy in the other lane is also in a Maverick. How cool!? Even better: each opponent (except one) I ran against today broke out. My lights were so-so (averaged in the teens & low 20's) but well enough to take the stripe in the most important round. Of all of the passes I made, the widest margin of victory was .014 second. Closest was .00015 when I ran an Altered on a almost heads-up race (his dial 7.92 mine was 7.90). Fun run, we were both side by side until just the last couple feet when I pulled him ever so slightly but used the brakes to scrub a little MPH and maybe a couple thousandths of ET. I dialed pretty tight and knew it was going to be a nail biter. 'Twas fun though!
Must add my two cents, was great to see two Mav's in the finals. Course nobody had a camera with them, duh. Anyway was great fun and lot's of good racing. My "Mont" was performing like a real race car, 8.82, 8.81, 8.82, in time trials. Dialed an 8.82 and with the perverbial brain fart, get a red light. Buy back and because of increase in air temp, dial 8.84, draw one of my worst fears, last half points champ who runs consistent 7.70's. Have run him several times this year and never seem to be able to beat him. This time is my time, .515 light and pedal it at the 1/8th and break him out in the 1000, for the win. Run 8.88 in the process so leave the 8.84 on the window. Next run I pull another bone header, and get another red one, the worse part is I ran it out and got a 8.85 Car good, driver sucks big time. The rent a Stang, turns in consistent 9.09's with a couple 9.10's thrown in. But has same red light desease as this ancient guy. Still a good day anyway. One other note, figured out that, out of over 100 regular racers at out track, the oldest is 72 and then one at 68 and then me at 66. Scary stuff to think about, when trying to beat the younger generation. Sure feels good when I do though. Not so good when they whip my sorry butt more often than not.
well hell dad, give em hell, i leave for iraq thursday, found les a fender for the ole car, along with a few more, anyhow, tell todd congrats for me
congratulations on the win. i wish my lights would all be so-so (teens and .020's). i'm happy with anything under a .050. great to look around at the end and see how many grayhairs are still around.
Hell Dave... you can beat me any day of the week at Dragracing, Im positive of that. But, I sure do appreciate all the help you've given me over the years. Gettin the ole Comet up there soon and maybe you can give me a few pointers. I've seen you beat your fair share of young guys, so don't worry Again congrats to Todd for taking home the money again.
