I want to put a Grabber hood on my 70 Mav but I had a question, are the vents or "snorkels" on the grabber hood functional? Maybe a dumb question, but it just crossed my mind.

HHmmmm. I had an idea. I was looking at the duel snorkel 83-85 air cleaner assemblys. I was going to flip over the snorkels so they angle up. They end up right under the grabber "scoops". They also have vacuum activated flaps for switching from hot exhaust manifold air to cool inner fender air. So block the exhaust part to keep out rain and such or rig it to open under full throttle. (Ok working on that) The problem was the air cleaner was too big to fit between the tower bracees. Sooo. I Heard the duel snorkel unit on the 82 two barrel 5.0s was an inch or two smaller. If I can find one and a spare set of scoops I think I can fab a working ram air. will look good two with the right seal to the hood. Just an Idea I am looking at.

WOW, much more complicated than what i had planned. You rock! i was just gonna cut the holes and use the heater duct hose to come back near the air cleaner, and tack weld on two small cable activated flaps like you can buy at home depot to the cleaner and attach the hoses. then run the cable to inside the car. yours sounds much cooler.

Only bad thing about that is that the grabber scoops are in a very bad location to really "grab" any air. I bet if you had one in a wind tunnel the smoke would flow about a foot over the hood. No real gains, but a functional scoop is a novel idea. I believe Thomas Hackman has made fully functional scoops. No hoses, seals like a shaker hood does around the air cleaner if I remember the thread about it.

True, seems like the hole or inlet would be too small to even make diffeence also.

My grabber hood came with the scoops already cut out and I though it was that way from factor, then i found out it wasn't, so i traded them to someone here on the forum for a set that was not cut out.

I got 2 sets, one cut and one original. I'm thinking that the cut ones might at least make the engine compartment a little cooler.

From what I've read about getting air into the engine, a cowl hood is the best due to the high pressure area in that area. Uhh, it's like Bernoullis Principal or something.

From the books I have read, air close to the body is turbulen air about 1" above has a smooth flow. I will bet that those holes flow more than the carb that most poeple have on their cars. They are larger than the four holes on my 600 I would bet that they are about 900-1100 cfm. You would be surprised at how much stuff gets in those holes, bugs, pebbles, sticks, etc

I had ours opened up when we had the stock front suspension and if I remember right the upper shock mounts are right behind the holes. Now we have the Mustang II suspension and there is nothing in the way so it was pretty easy to make them functional.

That is a great point about the shock mounts being behind them - I didn't even give that a thought!

JAP901 - that was me that traded you. I will be making a fancy set for "show and tell" using some aluminum honeycomb screen.

once again tom surprizes me.I didnt know he could read:huh: :evilsmile

I belive several of us on here have functional scoops. the ones on our 77 are opened up,..I havent noticed any real performance advantage, but it does help extracting hot air after a drive.
