They were flat black from the factory.

Are you referring to the bezel around the taillights or the areas around the taillights?

They were flat black if they came black from the factory. Not all Grabbers had black tailight bezels ... it depended on the color scheme ...

'70 Grabbers didn't have black bezels at all did they?
Somebody give us the details. I know the blacked out taillight
    panel disappeared after '72.

here is a picture of the rear on my factory 70 Grabber the bezels have not been changed. I dont suppose they would have put black bezzels on any of them being that it would be black on black. just my :2cents:

Black tail light bezels carry a 1971 Part number (D1DZ) so they would not have been available on a 1970 Grabber.

The black taillights on my Grabber are NOS ... they sort of have a gritty texture to them like the original Ford blackout paint ...

1970 Grabbers DID NOT have black bezels.......bright metal ones are correct.

    Also.....NO 1970 Maverick Grabbers had a 302....or any V-8.

The bezels may be called flat black but they are more like satin black. They have a little gloss to them that shows even with the textured finish. Flat would not have any gloss. I would paint them satin before flat. Satin is easier to clean anyway.

That's because the 302 was not offered for the Maverick until 1971.

My 72 had black bezels fwiw...
Also, Ford tended to use "semi-gloss" black during the late 60s-into the 70s.
    What the difference is between:

    Semi gloss
    Semi flat
    Satin
    ????????
    I have no clue.

I know for sure my 72 had no flat black on it anywhere.

ok, let me clarify a bit, i have a 72, 302, manual brakes, and 3.00:1 rearend, 5 lug, and sportlamps. (looks to be a deep carolina blue i dont know the paint code because that part of the id sticker is rubbed off! ) it has black strips, i think, they look brown now, because of fading. Another thing, were 72 grabbers painted black between the hood scoops, like Mr. Hines' red mav, my car isnt, it just has pinstrips running around the outside of where the black would be. im wandering if someone hasnt repainted this hood. right now, im thinking my tailight bezels are supposed to be polished silver, but i probably wont know until i take her apart.

If the stripes on the side are black...then the tail-light panel should be black. If the tail-light panel is black....so are the taii-light bezels. At least that is the way my 72 Grabber was.

I'd have the bezels powder-coated in a semi-flat black. I'm sticking with chrome on mine...
