Sorry if this isn't the right board, but I am new here. My son has decided to make his first car a Maverick. (I have offered a newer Mustang, but he wants a classic to fix up over time)

I am looking at one for him and found one in decent shape (very little rust - no eat through) But I am not sure if it is a Grabber or not. I tried to look on this site to see, but am still unsure. It is a 1970 so it doesn't have the different trim numbers in the VIN. It has the blacked out grill, blacked tailight area, blacked out headlight recesses, black vinyl interior, bright/shiny taillight trim. But there really is not a spoiler on the back. Not sure if like the mustang ii if these could be removed.

Its not really a big deal if it is not, but just wanted to know.

The Grabber option in 1970 was only an appearance option. It didn't have the trunk spoiler or the Grabber hood. Those were introduced in the 1971 model year.

I'm not positive on the 70 Grabber body graphics so I'll pass on giving you the wrong info. My own 70 wasn't a Grabber so that is why I'm not sure.

The 1970 Grabber absolutely DID have the Trunk Spoiler. and If it was removed it would leave a bunch of big holes in the trunk lid unless they replaced the entire trunk lid then the car you are looking at is probably NOT a Grabber.

Even in 1970 the Grabbers had the spoiler and the sport mirrors

I find it interesting that they show it with a vinyl top. Did they make one in 1977? I haven't noticed any but am just curious.

Thank you guys. This helps a lot. Trying to get time to drive 180 miles to look at this one and a yellow/black '74. I am not hopeful about the '74. You can tell by the picture that something is up with the frame. There is a crimp on the drivers side.

Hopefully we will find the right one and be spending more time here getting info on fixing her up.

I actually looked at the one in the middle this afternoon. It isn't in bad shape. A little bit of surface rust here and there. Paint is peeling in places, but interior is pretty nice. No rips in seats, carpet looks good. There is a crack in the dash. Factory power brakes and power steering. Engine ran smooth. A storm was coming so I didn't test drive it, just inspected engine.

DS is hoping for a darker color like red or yellow.

Dont let color sway your desicion...Color can allways be changed. Be more concerned with mechanicle condition and Physical condition (rust)...All parts present etc...

You know that. I know that. My son kinda knows that, but he is looking at if from a high school perspective. Is he willing to drive it to school until he gets the money saved for the paint job. :)

He has a "master vision" for his car. He doesn't want his new car to have to live down the "family car" reputation at school once he gives it that muscle car look.

I want him to start making some of these types of decisions himself. I won't let him make a huge mistake, but if he is going to start restoring cars, he has got to learn.

    Thanks for the advice
