had 73 but it got stolen. looking for another
i am new to the board. not new to the inet tho.
presently, i am serving in iraq. i do counter electronics and jam those who try to blow our guys up. ex-navy guy 10 years. civilian now.
i had a maverick back in high school (89) and just before i joined the navy, i took it to a junk yard to have him do some work. it never got finished before i went into boot camp and, when i returned, he said i "abandoned it" there since he had it 2 months. anyway, my show mav becamae a stripped mav while i was gone (bucket seats, comet gt hood, ratchet shifter, narrowed/locked 9"...etc.). i was so crushed, i couldnt do anything about it (law wise).

now, i am looking to rebuild another one when i get home from iraq. i could go with a cougar or vette and make a 200 mph 6 speed, but where do u run those without going to jail for a long time? my interest has always been creeping up on a 'stang 'vertible loaded with high school or college guys with their dates and blistering their collective azzes off the line.

i saw a post where a guy wanted to stuff a 428 into a mav. nice, but heavy. the mustang II front was designed for v-6's. so feed it one. novak makes motor mounts for the buick 231/350 to fit the maverick (or they did when i last saw them). this buick v-6 (turbo) will fit nicely in front of a 200r4 and pull BLAZING e.t.'s .
these are my thoughts when i get home. my oldest (a twin) is 14 and likes mavericks as well and i am thinking about giving him the buick 350 mostly stock. he likes the 74+ and i am a fan of the 73-
TA Performance makes an aluminum block that can handle 2k hp (4 bolts plus 2 cross drilled) and some alum heads which can handle 1200 hp all in a 299 lb (IIRC) complete engine. 1200 hp in 300 lbs. (assuming you push them hard and run like 100 octaine). but 800 hp on boost is easily made and light as hell. that with the 200r4 close gear ratio and OD, you can drop 4.56's or 4.11's in without worrying about go fast gear cause itll still punch 140 mph prolly.
only problem is body flex. i wouldnt know how to keep the front end together without ripping mounts off. i am going to put the mustang II front end in it under the v-6 so it should handle pretty well i would hope.

anyone see a problem with this setup? comments on how to make it hold together under say 400-600hp?

i also saw on ebay, there is a nicely redone 73 with 68 cougar seq tail lights (i read this from another post on here and if u guys wondered what they looked like, you could take a peek).

anyway, thanx for a great forum. will be checkin back here regularly.

    Rowdy J,
First, thanks for your work in Iraq - may you have the protection of the ages.
    now, on to your questions.
The only way to make a 70's Comet or Maverick stand up to 1500+ hp is to put in welded sub-frame connectors and a good roll bar to add the stiffness to the frame. Add to that an export brace and Monte Carlo bar and box in the front of the sub-frames with connecting torque boxes to connect the radiator support. You could strip down a junk parts car and build a tube space frame which would be stronger and lighter. That way you wouldn't be cutting up a restorable car that someone may want to bring back to original.
I am unsure about your transmission choice - not familiar enough with the 200R4 to say. I do know that 1500 hp is the upper limit for a C4 and I don't think it would stay together without constant freshening when used at full power consistantly.A C6 could be built to handle 1500+ hp and there are some with the small block bell housing but they are rare. I like the wild side of making cars fast and light but this is a bit far out even for me.

i dont like 200r4's or 700r4's all my g-bodies had one or the other and they all craped out at about 150,000 miles. and that behind sb v8's making like 100hp

no no.i am looking at 5-600 hp max. i was only saying the block can handle 2k and the heads support 1200 all on 100 octain. i am only going to run as much as i can ... >=)
prolly around 500 or so if i can find a way to put a 4 link coil over setup in the rear and the mustang II front end and link it all together.
the 200r4 is just as tough as the 700r4 cept it fits BOP the bolt pattern. also, the first gear isnt as tall as the 700, so when it shifts, it keeps the engine in its power band better...it is the tranny they used in the buick grand national to out run the '87 vette stock (v-6 did it). there are a good variety of kits. i was thinking 3500 locking stall and stage II shift kit. also trans brake.
that way i can spool my turbo up before launch and put my son through the trunk...=)
1500 hp in a maverick is wack!!! (where do i get one?)

did u change the screen and fluids in your 200 or 700 or ran it till it died? (just askin)..=)

and thanx for the welcome. i try to stay safe (cept when the mortars drop, then we run around like headless chickens..lol)
