I have heard people saying that the GT comet grille has 3 stainless steel parts. When I just bought my GT the guy said that the grille doesnt have them and he didnt remember the one he bought in 71 having them either. He claimed its the hood and two fender trim pieces. 1/2 the GT owners say they have them 1/2 say they dont. Does anyone have a photo of what a factory original GT grille is supposed to look like or know what the real deal is? Ben
The GT did not come with a 3 piece spoiler in/on the rear. The grill for a GT has three stainless cross sections. I have a NOS one I can get a pic from but it would be faster for you to look up Seth here on the forums, his car has one on it. He is also the most savy on the subject from what I can tell. The GTs also had the stripes and the hood scoop. I am not 100% about the scoop on all years tho. Others will chime in i'm sure.
My original purchase, a 71 Gt had the 3 crossbars in the grill. Unfortunately a previous girlfriend put the car into a ditch and I never kept that part of the grill that was damaged. What a mistake because those trim parts are difficult and expensive to obtain. I have used sliver paint to replicate them on my car now...
So the GT grille and standard grille is the same? The only difference is that the GT's had three chrome stripes added to a standard grille?
Comet Grill questions What I am about to say is based on research from owners, nothing can be found from Ford/Mercury supporting these statements. It appears that the '71/'72 Comets had stainless strips on the grills. GT or non-GT. I have seen argent & gray grills with the strips. I have seen argent & black(GT style) grills with the strips. I have never seen the stainless strips on a grill that was supposedly from a'73-'77 Comet. So, my guess is, it was a '71/'72 only piece. Now, were they on every '71/'72 Comet grill? With the rarity of these strips on grills sold for parts, I suspect no. Perhaps they were only on early GT's and the LDO equipped versions???? Clean, original '71 Comet with argent/gray grill with the strips: Clean, original '71 Comet GT with argent/black grill with the strips: My '74 Comet GT grill-restored and not my original, but the same as all other '73-'75 GT's that I have seen. Argent/black with no strips: A NOS '73 standard grill, argent/gray with no strips: Seth
Thanks for the info Seth, Im starting to think that maybe all 71-72 GT's didnt have them either. I just checked the grille on the GT and the 3 locations are the same thickness as the standard grille I have. The lights in the GT grille are coded as D0 and the guy swears its the original grille. He also said the one he bought didnt have Stainless Steel strips. Do you think its possible is was based on the plant it was made at?
More than likely it was the build date with later 72's having the same grill as the 73 with out the stainless strips.
The stainless trim will not fit on a standard grill. I have 2 sets of them and have tried. I believe all 71 & 72 GT's had the stainless. Problem is if the grills ever gotten broken over the years, they were most likely replaced with a standard grill because the GT grill was no longer available. Thats was the case with my 71 GT.
does any one have a 73 comet gt grill that is restored? ill trade? it is going to take to much time to restore mine. my grill is perfect , i just dont want to take the time to restore it .
Here's some pics on the internet, of a beautiful 71' Comet GT that sold: It looks like it had the 3 metal strips on the grill. I wonder if a member on here bought this one? It has the black high back buckets with comforweave, deluxe door panels, rear defogger/original switch and bezel, 302 V8/3 speed manual. The compass attached to the dash looks funny. http://www.motorcarportfolio.com/product.php?id=3284
