Has anyone used GT40P heads on these maverick if so what headers did you use ? Without cutting shock towers any problems with spark plug wires ? Thanks
I ran them years ago, great heads. The only thing I did to my Hooker 6901's was grind a little off the flanges to clear the spark plugs. The spark plugs and boots are another story...
IIRC, it was on the driver's side where the spark plugs are directly beneath the header tubes. Had to use Accel "shorty" spark plugs there. Don't remember the part number. Used small 90* boots that are for the newer big distributor caps with posts. They will also fit spark plugs.
Every once in a while I'd have to replace one, they would get brittle from the heat and arc. I should have just put a short piece of header wrap on those tubes.
I got a set of Hedman 88400 Shorty headers I put the same ones on my other maverick so I know these will fit might have too shave the headers like you did to make them work on the GT40P heads
I believe it was each cylinder. Quick work with a grinder. Just enough to get a spark plug socket in there. Don't know if you'll have to do this with your headers, I cut down (shortened) a plug socket, drilled a larger hole in the ratchet end and cut an opening in the side. Used a wrench on the hex part of the socket. Nowadays with the platinum plugs and such you may never have to take them out.
Different model headers have problems on various cylinders. Number 6 & BBK 1515 header fought for same space on my T-Bird. Of course the 1515 won't begin to fit in Comet/Maverick.
I had some issues with my World products heads and hooker headers years ago. I wrapped the header tube after I dimpled it. And I used these jackets on the wires. I also used Accel shorty plugs. It worked really well. I'd say it would work equally well on the gt40p heads.
I would not wish the gt40p heads on anyone. Problem after problem. Burnt wires, all on the driver's side. Got the accel shorty plugs, with braided heat sleeves, and i shaved the towers. I invested too much time porting and getting those freaking P heads to work. It is aggravating. But i will continue to be frustrated, cause why give up now. 6901 hookers too. 302 from mountaineer with an e cam and trick flow valve spring kit, gt40pee heads, stock timing cover with pulleys, 600 holley with vacuum secondary, 6901 headers, weiland intake, in a 73 maverick. msd 6a box duraspark 2 distributor I just switched from cherry bomb side exhaust to dual muffler rear exhaust. The project never ends
