I did a few of the upgrades that needed to be done this week and I'm gonna give it a go tomorrow night if the weather cooperates. Made a carb tray that looks lke a surf board sittin on top of the motor, not pretty but functional. Installed a Magnafuel Quickstar 300 fuel pump and regulator and re-did the plumbing 10an from the tank to the regulator and 2-6's off the reg, the plugs are burnin white hot, the holley blue pump was starving the carb. If I can get my issues with the tranbrake settled and I get lucky I might be able to pull a high 5 out of the hat
Please, please, (if you can) have someone video it for us. We all want to make a 5 second pass, even if it's vicariously through you. ....and about that transbrake thing, just close your eyes tight and release the adrenaline button! Good luck (we'll be expecting a full report upon your return)
good luck. sounds like fun. i completely melted the center electrode of the #1 plug at bakersfield last otober. we rejetted a number of times. still ran white. we finally went to another plug and that cured the problem. just a thought if it dosen't richen out a little.
Hey Rick, You made me think back and laugh. The first time I ever ran a 5 second car....my dad had bought a new (for us) dragster. It was a typical bracket dragster, solid rear suspension, BBC, PG w/transbrake, etc...nothing REAL fancy. The thing ran 5.50's. Anyway, my dad was a little hesitant about making a full-out run in the thing right away since he had never pulled a parachute or anything before (we actually didn't need the chute for the 1/8th mile, but it was on there because the previous owner ran some 1/4). So he asked me if I wanted to make the shake down runs on it. I said SURE! and hopped in and strapped down. Now, I was regularly running a mid to high 6 second car so I thought I was prepared for the launch. WRONG!!!! When the transbrake let go, I had my head forward a little bit, and when the thing launched, I smacked my head HARD against the rear cage uprights! 2 seconds later, about halfway through the run, I regained my composure enough to realize the cones were now upon me, and I wasn't going to get the chute out. I mashed the brake pedal a little too hard and the rear began to bounce. I don't mean an inch high, I mean like 6 inches high! It felt like the stupid thing was going to pole vault. It stopped in plenty of time though, and I made the turn like I planned it that way. When I got back to the pits, he asked me why I didn't pull the chute. I told him you don't need it !! Then he asked me why I kept rubbing my head. I told him that I was looking for aspirin and a Huggy's factory rep! We still laugh about it today. I managed to keep it out of the cornfield though. It occurs to me now, that I just didn't have sense enough to lift! Actually went 4 or 5 rounds that night. The car was super consistent once I got used to it. That was about 4 cars and 2 kids ago! Good luck on your quest. It's a blast! Kind of makes me wish I would get in gear and put the race car back together, and putt along at mid to upper sixes again! Later
Got rained out...AGAIN. Gonna try again tonight. To say I'm chompin at the bit would be an understatement
The weather cooperated Allen, but the car didn't. I had installed a tranny cooler earlier this week and one of the lines at the tranny came loose, it just happenned to do this as I released the T-brake on my only launch of the night. It sprayed my right rear tire on the holeshot, the backend got loose on me but I managed to shut it down before I found the gaurdrail. Talk about "pucker factor", good grief. I learned a valuable lesson, these are the only 2 connections on the entire car that aren't AN fittings and they would have been if I had waited for Summit to send me the right connectors, but I didn't. If your gonna clamp a steel braided line cut the braid off and clamp the rubber part of the hose. I just hope I didn't hurt my tranny.
