Two concerns today: 1. I have some unknown 302 balancer (definitely pre-85) on my '85 302. The Mav runs fine for the most part, but it makes me wonder if I should keep it this way. Input? 2. After installing some KYB GasAJust shocks and the PST kit in the front, the front end is about 2" taller than the back. When I go 70+, It feels like my front end takes off (and I subsequently have no steering). What can I do to keep that from happening but still keep the current stance? Thanks friends! Atzy.
I don't know if your kit included springs,if it did they will settle some in a few days.Mine set way up but the alignement shop told me to wait a couple weeks before getting it aligned,a front spoiler might help if you want to keep the front end up and still handle good.
I can only offer an opinion on the first question. The year of the balancer is not critical, but the amount of imbalance is. If the crankshaft is an '85 then you must have a 50 oz. balancer. You must confirm that you have 50 oz. I would suspect that you would b experiencing a vibration issue if you had the wrong type of balancer.
Sure... Sure, I have vibrations (tolerable) at 1500 rpm, but not really at any other rpm. I doubt it's solely the harmonic balancer's fault, but since it's one of the few "old" parts on this "new" engine, I have my suspicions. So, two more questions: 1. Is the harmonic balancer on a '77 302 Mav 50 oz? 2. What sorts of front spoilers are options for me on my '75 Mav? Thanks, keep the info coming! Atzy.
The '77 cranks used the 28 oz balancer. If this is the on you have on the '85 crankshaft, you must chang it ASAP or you will eventually hammer the bearings out of it. You could probably get the correct one from Ford for about $100 or so. I believe '81 is the year Ford switched from the 28oz to the 50 oz.
damper You can get a front spoiler from MAS Racing Products. They dont have a web site, yet, but you can call them at (651)644-6811. Their ad in Mustang and Ford magazine has a price of $49.00, not bad. It is next on my list, with the Cobra Jet hood scoop. Rod
Spoiler... Sounds interesting...is the application for a '74 and up? Oh, and which "Mustang and Ford" magazine is it...so I can look at pictures? Thanks! Atzy.
spoiler The magazine is called Mustang and Fords, it deals with the vintage type Mustang. The othe mag is Mustangs and Fast Fords, and they have mostly 79 and newer Fords. They ad for MAS racing products is on page 12 of the Mustang and Fords mag. The spoiler will fit all Mavs, with a little bit of modification. Rod
balancing act As I remember you have a AOD with the 50oz flywheel. The 77 damper is a 28oz setup. You need to get the 50oz damper. The front end will lift the faster you go, due to air under it. Loosen the sway bar brackets where they bolt to the frame, bounce the front end a few times, and then have someone set one the front end while you retighten the bolts.
Hey RickyRacer... Hey, Good to see you're still around. Last you saw it, it was kind of in jumbles, but now it's pretty much all together, and works quite well. Perhaps when work allows I'll come by and show you! Anyways, now that I've put the 50 oz harmonic balancer on and remounted the timing cover, water pump, accessories, etc., it vibrates _much_ less. I can't wait to drive it somewhere. The sway bar idea seems pretty simple, I might try that if I can find a hefty friend to sit on the bumper for me. Until then, what light can you shed on the spoiler idea? Thanks, Atzy.
still around I used the MAS front spoiler on mine. Fit pretty good. They have ads in the car magazines all the time. For the rear you'll either have to find a Grabber back end setup or maybe the spoiler like Ford put on the older Stangs.
