has anyone ever tried to set up a new trans from like the mazdas or somethin that has the manual trans with the ability to put it in an automatc gear, so you could drive in auto or man, just whichever you feel like that day?

All of my C4's can shift manually or automatically how ever you feel.
The nice thing is they shift just as agressively in "drive" as they do when you shift them manually.

edit: The transmissions from the imports are not strong enough for most of our V8 cars.

I mean that you could shift down to first gear at 120 MPH and it would go into low gear - BLOWING the engine. You can shift to low, at any speed and it will stay in low to any speed; you can shift it to second at any speed (even from a stop) and it will stay in second gear to any speed; You can't put it in third and have it start in third - If you put it in drive it will start in 1st, shift to second and then to third. It shifts at "normal" rpm with light throttle and if you push harder on the gas pedal it shifts later and harder. You can **** to and from first and second and it will go into that gear. if you are above the speed where it would normally be in third when you shift to third it will go into third. If you are in third and you stomp the gas pedal to the floor it will automatically down-shift and go like a race car.

Most automatics, including factory C4's, won't let you shift into a lower gear above a certain point and most modern transmissions only let you shift into a couple of the four or more gears that they have.

oh, id like to know how you wired it up, it sounds like somethin my cousin done to his old ford truck. but i was actually thinkin more of somethin that could shift like a manual and then have a drive gear to put it in.

When you say "shift like a manual" do you mean with an "H" pattern or just being able to put it in any gear you want? My C4's do shift ito 1st and second at any speed when you want or you can put it in drive and let it shift. Been doing it for 30 years or more.

I adapted a 3 speed manual shifter to a C4 once and built a "gate" so I could shift it in a more positive manner but it was kind of cheezy. I had a lot of people surprised to find out it was an automatic when I put it in drive and let it shift itself. The factory or after-market floor shifter is easier to use and it is all in a straight line.
