So my 1971 has become a yard brick for last 9 months.. have about 3k to get it safe to drive. So my question is this, I saw a add on craigs for a 4 door 1975. "1975 Ford Maverick 4 door. Clean, 94,500 org.miles. Runs and drives good.. 250 six cylinder, 3 speed C-4 auto. 5 lug suspension. Wire wheel covers. Body, paint and interior all decent. New radial tires and battery. Would make great first car or dependable transportation. $1200.00 OBO. " Would this make sense to buy and eventually scavenge parts and motor, transmission swap for the 1971? The 71 is in need of a interior gutting and some minor body work and new window gaskets and windows.. paint blah blah blah... but the motor and transmission are going to need rebuilt so thinking a swap from a 200cid to a 250 might be more affordable and the right direction to go. Thoughts opinions?
Not much off the 4-door will fit the 2-door except things from the dash forward. The doors are the wrong size to use any glass or related parts. The back seat is different shape and front seat doesn't flip open to get into the back seat area. Motor and transmission is the only thing that will swap and the 200 will get better mpg than the 250. That being said, I say don't do it.
no not a good deal spend the money to get what u have road safe you didn't say what you need to do what does your car need
I suggest buying the 4-door and DRIVING it. At least you will have a Maverick/Comet you can drive....versus one you have to push around.
I also agree on driving the 1200.00 4 door Maybe this is also a good time to consider a V8 swap for the 71
Agreed and possibly it can be bought cheaper, offer $800 and work up... While you are croozin' around in the 4dr you can start work on the yard brick... If you keep it in good condition, can probably sell it for a profit...
Keep looking. You can find a drivable 2 door for under $3000 if you look long enough. Then use the yard brick for parts for it....
Thanks for the input, I was tempted to buy the 75 to drive as I am really tired of walking everywhere. I figured it was worthless for parts other than motor and transmission as a donor for my 71. I agree paying $1200 for a used motor transmission swap is a bit insane.
Buy a 80's Honda, should be pretty reliable and inexpensive. Part out the maverick and build a nice Comet. Or without the latter and build up the Mav.
Yeah, I think I will just save up and work on the 71. Who needs to drive atm. I will just keep walking and maybe get a bicycle again. My last one got wrapped around the hood of a speeding txting moron while I was on it .. lol
stick with a bike parts are cheap there is no gas cost and you stay in shape and a couple of more benefits to a bike are no insurance needed and no speeding tickets save your money do a budget driver build on your car and do the work your self the 3k you have should be enough to get it road worthy. my car isnt road worthy but until I took it apart I only needed to spend around $500 to get it road worthy. brakes are cheap all of the brake parts are cheap fuel lines are elcheapo engine parts are pretty cheap. and since its a 6 you could rebuild it easily yourself not alot of parts and the parts that are there are HUGE and easy to recognize what theyre for I say skip the 4 door and fix the car you have or better yet get a comet
