I have two steering boxes that came out of Maverick. They are SMA-Y and SMA-F1. What are the ratio's and which one is the manual and which one is power steering version? Were they used in any other Ford's? Thanks Waid
SMA-F1 is a manual box... SMA-Y isn't shown in the '65-'72 Master Parts Catalog, though must be P/S if you know for sure that's where it was used... SMA boxes were used in full size Fords without P/S & Fairlane/Torino/Falcon/Cyclone etc from '68/'71... My '69 428 Fairlane has a SMA-B and Comet has SMA-B1(the 1 indicates some type of production change)... Both of these have a 16:1 ratio vs 21:1 for manual boxes... Prior to '71 Stangs used a SMB box that is smaller than SMA models(switched to SMA boxes for M/S in '71)...
So it looks like you can turn each one lock to lock and count the rotations and this should tell if they are MS or PS.
SMA-Y is listed in the 77 Service Spec Guide as the 16:1 PS box used in Maverick/Granada. SMA-B is also listed as the same box too.
