Looking for some recommendations on what the best fitting header to use on a 351 w in a maverick. my old set was made by hooker. Not sure if they still make them, or if there is something out there that is better. Also if you use aluminum heads with larger ports. Does someone sell a larger tube header? Any suggestions would be appreciated

Crites are the easiest to install & I`m prob going to use them myself on my car, however, eventually I want a set of custom Kooks to make max hp.

Welcome Paul, I use the Hooker # 6208 on my 408 windsor. They require some work and fabrication to make them work, but they are 1 and 3/4" tube off the shelf.

Obviously. The towers have to be notched for the 6208....do some of the tubes have to be modified??

Yes, notched towers, side of steering box needs to be ground flat, right frame rail notched, firewall hammered back on both sides. After all of that, they will basically fit without bending, dinging, or modifying the tubes.

hi..maybe i need some 6208 for my maverick .. i have the Crites now but the hookers might be easier to switch from 302 to 351 W...plus not sure the crites dont make as much HP...those tubes for the front 2 cylinders..the gas sure sure has to flow along way to exit..

Thanks all for the good replies. I am looking to use an aluminum head on my 351 build. Now I know which headers to use.
BB 466 do you have any pics on the shock tower mods you can post? I am looking to do the shock tower modification soon. And looking for ideas and pictures on how others have cut their towers.

I will try to get you some pics next week, but basically they are cut straight down from the top back to where the firewall strut bolts to the tower, and down to the top of the upper control arm. Plated with 11 ga. plate, all seams welded.

Paul, you can also check the pics in the magazine article in RPM Magazine, March issue, page 75. Here's the link. rpm-mag.com/march issue.

FWIW...I know you are running a 351 and mine is only 302, but I ran long tubes for a while, and they worked well.

But after I cut my front suspension out and went with a Mustang II-type install, I decided to go with shorty headers, and believe it or not, it runs WAY better now. MUCH more low end torque. The rear end breaks free much easier now than before.

Plus, no fitment issues, no dragging on the ground, etc.

I actually made a 3" long tube bent to fit around everything, so it still hooks up like a long tube header. But without moving anything, I can stab it right into place and bolt it up without any obstructions.

I used Hedder Shorties and they fit the block TIGHT. See below.

Also, I used V-groove bands instead of the large triangular flanges so they only hang 1/4" or so lower than the tube.

Murphy88, I think the hooker 6901's are the better header. IMHO. I think that is what i have on mine. You should have no issues with fit with the 302, but i am not sure about the Dart jr. head. I would have to look that head up to make sure the ports align with the 6901's.
Scooper I would like to see your pics, for some reason I cannot open them from your posts. I will look at them on my other computer, maybe i will be able to open them there.
I started the shock tower mods on my maverick a couple weeks ago. Starting to fabricate sheet metal to close the towers back up. I have been wanting to modify them since I got the car. I am excited to have the extra room. I would really like to do the mustang II front end... Scooper I am jealous... maybe someday.....
