I have a 302 that i planned on putting gt40p heads off a 98 explorer on it and then into my Maverick
I heard that there is a header/spark plug clearance problem with these heads
is anyone running them & what header are you using i was planning on buying the headman 88300s

I think you can use the short "peanut" plugs and they will work. Headers may interfere with the shock towers, however. Good luck.

Check this out for the plug clearance issues.

The plugs are Accel P526S shorty plugs. And then use 90 degree HEI type boots, and even then, you will burn the plug boots. I ended up with a header flange to use as a spacer, and then 3 layers of gaskets on both sides to get the header out away from the plugs a bit.

I also made this [IMG] to get under the headers and get the plugs out. Still had to lift the engine off the mounts, and remove the header to remove any of the spark plugs.

I gave those P heads away and got a set of the non-P GT40 heads. No plug issue at all now.

I have the P heads on my engine and I bought the Ford Motorsports stainless headers. They are not cheap at $350, but their is no issues with spark plugs at all.

LOL, if I went through all of that I wouldn't be fooling around with P heads.
When I ran P's I used old Blackjack headers, and Accel shorty plugs in the driver's side with the 90* terminal/boots that Scooper mentioned.

Can anyone tell me what is the best long tube header to use with GT40P heads? I have stock shock towers that have been shaved back about 3" with stock motor mounts and a 91 Mustang GT roller motor. The clearance issue seems to be in the lower setting of the engine, I will need a block hugger header but, I know I will have to use accell shorty plugs and wire boots to keep from melting the wires. I just want to know from experience who makes the best header for this combo?

    Denso makes a short plug p# 5023
I am running those plugs & and head man 88300 headers with a header spacer on the dr-side to clear the header with no boots or boot burning problems with regular Accel wires, but I had to clearance the header a bit to get it past the shock tower & steering box. I had to make a tool to get the spark plugs out, but I can do it with out removing the header or jacking up the engine, you do have to pull the valve cover though but that just makes it easier.
I will take some pictures of this setup & my spark plug tool tonight and post them.

I think someone on here was advertising some Crites headers that I thought also worked on a 302. They looked like they would clear GT40P heads good because the tubes went straight down then back, but their kinda pric-ie $350~ plus shipping, for much more than that u could just buy a different set of heads lol and save ur self the aggravation.

Here is the tool I made to get the plugs out.

    Before [IMG]

    After[IMG]

I started with a deep 5/8" 3/8 drive spark plug socket, then cut it down and cut a window in it so it would slide over the plugs from the side. Also had to drill out the top so the plug body would extend out through it. This thing rides really low close to the plug base, and is tightened and loosened with a wrench.
