Okay, so i picked up a set of FREE 302 shorty headers from a friend... the tubes protrude too far out and would hit the shock towers...

    frustrating to say the least....

what headers work on a 71/72 Maverick Grabber w/ 302.

no a/c, no p/s i already took that crap off...

I'd prefer not to have full length due to clearance issues underneath, but realize i'll lose a little performance.

What fits in terms of a block hugger, or shorty for our cars...

and where can i get them? price? coatings?

    Thanks.

"FREE"... as the saying goes..."you get what you pay for"

" no a/c, no p/s i already took that crap off..." :naughty: some of us build enough power that A/C and P/S doesn't hurt our performance...:yup:

Yup...but it is all still ugly under the hood, and leaks everywhere. My A/C came off first, P/S just a few months ago. If only I could remove the transmission...it still leaks...:D

If you went long tube headers and had the flanges removed at the bottom, and welded up to the collectors, you wouldn't be dragging too low...It is the flange at the bottom that does most of the hitting on the ground and speedbumps.

The long-tube 6901s can be had for $150-ish, I got mine for $100.

Do a search. Doug Thorley shorty headers. I just installed them on my car and I posted pictures.

...so you are saying that without your A/C and P/S your car is "pretty" under the hood... (or maybe it's the hacked up rad. support that is the beauty factor).

My car ain't pretty, regardless of the hackness of my radiator mount, but I can swap my cam (or water pump, heads, intake manifold, etc.) in less time, cause I don't have to take all that other crap out of the way first....

I like to look into an engine compartment and be able to see a little ground, and put my hands on whatever needs to be fixed or replaced. (except for spark plugs on driver side...)

if you are doing these things once a week-month i can see where the extra (6) bolts could be a problem
i haven't had to do any of these things so far to my motor so the (2) bolts that hold the A/C bracket on and (4) on the condenser hasn't been a problem for me...:D

I have removed the manifold no less than 6 times in 5 years. I have had the heads off 3 times. Headers have come off at least 3 times passenger side, 7-8 times on driver side (to get to those plugs). New alternator, new radiator, several new thermostats, several new routings of heater and coolant hoses...

So yeah, I really like having all of that stuff out of my way.

Some of us use these cars to drive, some to race, I use mine to keep me from being bored, and I really enjoy swapping parts and seeing how the car responds.

And I don't need a/c or power steering.

If I ever do a "final build" and the car becomes something I will drive alot, then a small Sanden A/C compressor will go in on the passenger side, hoses will be short and low in the compartment. If I ever decide I need power steering, it will be an aftermarket MII type rack and pinion swap.
