In hopes of getting rid of my dim lights in the dash, a friend told me the headlight switch should be changed as it controls the brightness and the ceramic contacts get dirty after 36 years etc... I found a new one for $12 at autozone.

I cant get to the damn thing. Do I have to take out the dash? I have a/c and pulled the a/c tube out but it is way the hell up there and still blocked. Any suggestions?

the nut holding the switch to the dash is on the front (silver ring) using a flathead, or coin....etc. loosen that and remove. Your switch should then be able to fall into the dash. you can either remove your instrument cluster, or attempt from underneith to disconnect and remove. Very easy fix.

    question

to get the shaft out you have to press that button on the bottom. I cant get my hand up there it is in the far upward corner and my hand is big. are you saying to loosen it first let it drop a bit and then see if I can press the button?

the wiring harness is long enough to allow play. If you remove the nut holding it to the dash, you can push it through to the inside and let it drop near the pedals. Then you have all the room you need.

Got to remove the knob and shaft first. Use a screwdriver to push the button in if you can't get your hand up there.

You need to remove the Heater/AC controls. Plenty or room then.

that might be safer, after removing the knob, I didnt touch the shaft. Just unscrewed the whole thing from the front and pushed it through.

    Hmmmm

I will try Mr. Pie's way first. If not out comes the heater/AC control. I imagine just put the knobs on the heater/ac control out, flip off the cover and hopefully there are some screws there that easily come out and back in.

Pull the heater knobs off. VERY GENTLY pry the heater control cover off. If you are lucky....you won't brake off any of the posts. Pry on both sides of the cover with small screwdrivers. First the top....then the bottom. Pry a little out at a time....switching back and forth. Once you get the cover off.....you will see 2 screws that need to be removed. Just push the controls into the dash a little bit and you will see the button that needs to be pushed in. Push it in and pull the knob out at the same time.

No way to get the headlight switch out of the dash without first removing the knob....and you have to push that button in to get the knob out.

go ahead and pull the inst. cluster...the reason is, after you change the light switch you will still have the...dim lights :yup:.
change the bulbs to the new 5w. clean the lens and that will be better. white face the guages will help even more.(do it all at the same time) :thumbs2:..

Craig you are always a gentlman with good advice. Thanks. Yesterday I did my coil springs and shocks and replacedthem-no problem. Today I did the front breaks and when I was pulling the blue spring I flew back and got 11 stitches on the fore head. This is called a rookie going through the school of hard knocks. Hopefully I will graduate soon.

    Got the white gaguges done

I am getting the W5W in LED version in red.. The folks that took all our manufacturing jobs in China are selling lots of 10 lights for 8 bucks. And I did make the gauges white. Now I was to match the red led lights with my sunpro tach, temp, oil psi and volt gauges.

sorry to hear about the head...i have been lucky with them...have sent a few flying.
have you got a pic. of a cluster with the LEDs in it. i would think these old clusters would need more of the ...glow...type bulbs. i am old school so i might not understand how the LEDs work.:hmmm:
