I need a little help with headliner installation. When I removed the old headliner I left the stock "foam liner" in the car. It is thirty years old so it is a little brittle. Should I leave the "foam liner" in or should I go to the sound deadening liner that I see many of the restomod gurus using? It seems to me the sound deadening stuff would hold moisture and add weight. I also haven't decided wether or not to use it on the floor for the same reasons. Finally, is there a nice archive exlpaining headliner installation. Finally, who sells the best headliner? Thanks.
This article id for an early Mustang but it is very similar to our cars. http://www.mustangmonthly.com/projectbuild/38018/
Some people make things look and sound so easy to do. I for one won't be attempting this stage. As mentioned before "good reading" though.
You can use the metalic sound deadner. You will have to remove the front windshield and back glass. Remove the flip out rear glass. Remove theroof rail weatherstrip. When you remove the head liner note which holes the rods come out of. They will have to go back in the same holes. There may be 2 or 3 sets of holes. lay your head liner out in the sun to warm it up. Use 3M weather stripping glue and spray the roof edge and the back of the headliner. have pleanty clamps that are strong enough to hold the headliner. Install the rods in the headliner making sure you put them back like they were removed. Start at the rear glass and work your way toward the windshield. HAVE FUN. My advice is to take it to a professional. When you put the glass back in use new weather strips front and rear. Also it would be a good time to replace the roof rail weatherstrips. Hope this helps. Rough job for the inexperinced
Thanks for all of the responses. I think maybe I'll go the professional route. What headliner manufacturer/seller do you think is best? Do any of them provide the factory style insulation with the headliner?
mustangmarket(1749) Mustang Market This where I got mine. Just came in this week. Good quality, color matched well and they included material to do the visors. $49.95
Darrell, you going to do it yourself, or find someone there in AR area? Let me know. I need one also.
had the headliner professionally installed and it looks great. The mustang market liner was cut very well with little waste! It fit very well and the quality was excellent.
Glad to hear it worked out well I still haven't had mine installed. Waiting on some more parts and paint.
The glass was already out of the car; we had just painted it. In my humble opinion, take the glass out yourself and then have a glass guy put it back in after the headliner is installed.
