Couldn't find the link, but I need help replacing the heating core in 74 Comet. Tried it for 1st time Sunday since I got the car in May, guess what, coolant on the floorboard, then I looked under the mat and carpet and pad...Yuck!!!! Must have leaking long before I got the car this spring... Yes, I have the AC version, picked a core at Advance Auto Parts today... Guess I need detailed instructions or will pay for someone in the Memphis area to install or help install....tom
i did my non-ac core a few weeks ago. pretty simple. just remove the lower part of the dash, the plastic part and opened up the fiberglass box behind the glove box door. for now you should tie the hoses together to cut off flow to the heater core.
More info: Changed to 13lb rad. cap after reading that the 16lb on the car was too much from another link. The leak was before I changed caps and refilled. Is it possible the car had too much back pressure? What about the STOP LEAK STUFF, that what the guys at work said to use??? HELP............
TOM The heater core replacement is not to bad of a job . Just take your time do'nt get mad . You should have four mounting studs three through the fire wall and one under dash to mount evap. chamber . One heater door cable and two vaccum lines on chamber . On your 74 you will need to drop the lower dash to get to evap. chamber . Then remove heater door cable from chamber and vaccum hoses you will need to remove the passanger side kick panel . Also remove heater hoses and freon lines from eng side . Under dash remove elect. from blower resistor block. At this point you should be able to remove the evap case then take case to the work bench .There will a foam gasket on the case around the heater and a/c lines be very careful removing this gasket . Then remove clips that holds the case halves together . Remove a/c evap. Then remove rod from heater door this slide out of the door (pull through the case). There is a bracket that holds the heater core in case remove screaws to remove core . You will more then likeley need to reseal the doors in side the case. I used a foam backed head liner materal to do this . If you have any question feel free to call me phone # 951 533 9778 pst thx jay
Be careful pulling out the box as sometime the evap drain hose will break off. I would suggest removing this hose before you pull out the box.
Craig where is that hose located? Jay I assume the ac is charged since it was converted to 134 a year or so ago, what is the method to discharge, (I dont live in CA)...I see the 2 hose clamps and 2 silver lines with bolts about 4" off the firewall going to small silver item, looks like ac lines in the engine compare...I dont see the 4th bolt. Also the radio is in the lower tray? Will it just come out also? after market, I did not install I assume it will... Novice attempting this project....Thanks for help!!!
You can remove the lower dash without touching the radio. The radio is (should be) mounted in a metal plate that is screwed to the bottom of the metal dash. When you remove the lower dash the radio will still be hanging there.
You can also replace the core without cracking the AC hoses. It takes a little bit of monkeying around, but it can be done fairly easily.
Ain't nothin' "easy" about it. P!$$&$ me off. Every car manufacturer knows that heater cores don't last forever, and yet they do not design the vehicles for easy access for removal & replacment!...
Actually TL...some cars have very easy heater cores to remove. My 1968 Galaxie and my 1976 LTD wagon both have an access panel on the outside of the firewall in the engine compartment. Two sheet metal screws and out comes the heater core!! Wish they were all that easy. Tom....the drain hose is located on the far left corner of the box. It goes thru a hole on the transmission hump near the firewall. I also believe a Chilton's manual has detailed instructions on how to remove a heater core.
I hadda 75 LTD,, piece of cake to replace heater core. All else is pain in the A$$, I am going to install propane in every car I redo..................ha. Dan
Done! Found someone who knows about Mustangs, he came over and (helped or should I say DID) most of the work. 6 hours later we have heat, ac and I think all the pieces back together. I'm sure we set the record for the slowest install ever. TOM
