Anyone ever try Hedman headers? My best bud went to a Mustang resto shop recently and they told him to NEVER get Hedmans... he didn't tell why... I asked a co-worker about them, and he said that the mount flanges are thin, and also that he has seen friends run through a set of them in a year's worth of use, due to stress and rust. I don't know what to think, really... Maybe if you take care of 'em, they're ok... or maybe they're just piles of crap. Can anyone tell me from experience?
A freind of mine put a set on his 69.5, he didn't have any issues with them. i believe he had to lift the engine up a little to get them in but no clearance issues once in the car. i also liked that they use ball and socket collectors, no gaskets needed
I too believe that they are inconsistent. The welds around the primary tubes always seem to look crappy to me. To be fair though, I haven't bought a new set of headers in many years. As for rust... They all come with crappy paint from the factory. Any brand. If you install the headers straight out of the box, and maybe get some oils or grease on them... They burn off the paint in no time. Then comes the rust if you ignore them. Any header can hold up with paint, so long as you strip them right away and paint them right. Also gotta take care not to get oil, grease, WD40, or anything like that around them until they have heat cycled a few times. Then they will be fine for years.
Do you put the Dupli-color ceramic engine/header enamel on 'em?? That's the only thing that I know of...
I use BBQ paint myself. Usually comes in flat or semi-flat black, many brands. But it also can be had in other colors, especially if you get it at an auto parts store as "header paint".
Had great luck with mine, bbq painted them undid the motor mounts, jacked up the engine a little, you don't have too but i found it easyier if you remove the drag link from the pitman arm for a little extra clearance. All in all one of the simplest header insalls i've done yet. Derek.
Everything said here can apply to Hookers as well. Had one set of Hookers on a 67 big block Stang--------NEVER AGAIN!!!!!! Hedman's are a better deal for the money. I just bought a set off Ebay last week for the Comet $130 shipped. Probably should have waited for a better deal though.
I also have Headman's and they fit better than Hookers 6901. No problems installing, did not even have to raise engine. Slid both of them in from under the car. Good Luck
