So I'm about to get a 1972 Maverick in nice shape. Right now it has an Inline 6 in it and Im planning on driving it as is for a while. I'm trying to get an idea how expensive it would be to drop a 302 in it down the road some time. How much would it cost for a decent engine and labor to put it in? And would I need to swap the tranny also? Thoughts? Are there any other routes you guys would take? Thanks guys!
from Northeast Pennsylvania You'll be happy with that 302 - these little light cars love that V8 power
a decent used 302 runs for around 250-500 bucks depending on the year and the mileage where im from. check your local craigslist to get an idea. Heres a link to everything you will need for the swap so you can start searchin for the parts. http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=4581 In my opinion if you think you can handle it or have a relative or a buddy who knows a lot about this stuff, i'd try to swap it yourself you'll end up learning a lot more about your car and once you've done an engine swap youll be more able to guide yourself while doing repairs and moddin your engine. But otherwise i wouldnt have a clue how much a place would charge to do the swap. you'll love the power of that 302 no matter how it gets in there.ha
Thanks a lot for the welcome and the info guys. I would try to attempt it myself, but I'm currently living in an APT and dont have the tools or the room for the job... If anyone has paid to have this done, I'd like to know a ballpark cost.
Welcome to the board. A C4 tranny will work behind a 6 or a v8. The 6 is a little weaker but will hold up for a while if you don't thrash it. If your car has a 200 I6 in it you will need to change the bellhousing. If it is a 250 the bellhousings are the same. However you will need to change the flexplate. What flexplate you use depends on the year of the engine. If it is a late model 5.0 you need a 50 oz. plate. An earlier one takes a 28 oz. Do some search functions when you are ready to start looking for parts and ask questions on here before you spend the money.
