Me and my wife just bought our first car together, a 1975 Maveric. It runs well enough to get us around, but we would like to get it running at its very best. The problem is I'm not much of a mechanic. I've done a few small things like replace the heater core, and fuel filters, so I'm not completly usless. I just can't look at an engine and tell you what needs to be done to it or even what can be done to it. So, here I am looking for friendly advice on getting the most out of our car, and looking forward to the project and learning experience. Any advice on where to start, or what to look for would be helpfull.

    Thanks,
    Jeremy

Welcome to the madness,First thing I would do is get a couple books/manuals that cover your car.You should be able to find a Chiltons manual that covers Mavs/Comets on E-bay.its a good place to start.Ask any question you may have.Someone here has it... has done it...knowes where to get it... How to do it.There is probably a couple hundred years experience here when we put all our heads together.Use the search feature at the top of the page here,Lots of info there.Lots of reading too..Enjoy!!!

    Howdy and :Welcome:
As always, the brakes are the most important system on the car. Always, make sure they are up to par first. Then steering and components are a close second. After that, engine, transmission, and suspension. Last is cosmetics.

Welcome to the board. My car originally came from Toquerville, just off Hwy 15 in the southern part of your lovely state.

Don't worry about your skill as a backyard mechanic. That only comes with trying and that's 90% of the fun with old cars. This is the best board out there for helpful and experienced people, and always willing to help. Just keep posting and searching.

As for the actual work, just have a friend come over for moral support ( and maybe a beer). You would be surprised what a couple of friends sharing the same brain cell for that moment think they can accomplish and usually succeed at. At worst, he can drag you out from under the car by your feet and find the eyewash bottle for you if you forget your saftety glasses.:slap:

    Enjoy the ride!
