One I built back in the 70s. Body guy thought it would be funny to put an extra set of tail lights in it, as the first one got sandwiched between a full sized Buick and a full sized Meteor. No, it didn't blow up ! Found this site while searching to see if anyone still makes a V8 conversion kit. (haven't found any yet)
to the forum from Northeast Pennsylvania We used to have the Prince of all Pinto haters here a few years ago but he's been long gone. I like to think of the Pinto as the Maverick's little brother. BIG ENGINE - LITTLE CAR
Just joking ! When I was building Pintos, it was a close thing with the Mavericks. Older bro was spending big bucks on big cars (69 Mach1 428 SCJ, 69 Mustang Coupe 428 SCJ & Cougar Eliminator 428 SCJ) & I wanted fast as well. So went light & small blocks. I too went fast, but cheap ! Had a Boss 302 built for the above car. All fitted .... but needed a daily driver. So put a 302w into it. Maybe a good thing. Boss had 13.0:1. Cam specs I do not recall, but it wouldn't idle below 1200 RPM. Plus a truck load of other cool parts. Presently trying to track down that engine. No luck there, I'm thinking this one may do: http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/crate_engines/ford_performer_rpm_dual_quad_449.shtml
Welcome to the board. Looks like a nice crate motor. Any idea what the costss are on that and their single carb one.
Afraid to ask.... prices have changed a wee bit from the 70s ! Found some prices. http://store.edelbrock.com/fordsmall-block.aspx
That's out of my price league. Speedway has a 300HP 308 motor for $3500. Has a 30 month warranty. Was looking at that for a street motor.
Interesting. I was just dreaming about this crate EFI for my Comet. http://www.edelbrock.com/automotive_new/mc/crate_engines/ford_performer_430.shtml Dream, Dream, Dream......
That engine is just begging for boost..... Boss block, forged internals, efi. Damn it i wish i would have won the mega millions
I love pintos, my wife hates them. I always wanted to do a turbo 2.3l conversion on one but never got around to it. Maybe an early SHO motor...
When I installed the 289 in my '72 wagon I used a Hooker kit that had engine frame mounts and clutch linkage. Had to buy Mustang II motor mounts and front coil springs to go with it. Wouldn't be too dificult to fab something up.
Did you use the swap headers that came up and went towards the front of the car, then down and back? We used to call them spider headers. Was the Mustang II front chassis any different than the Pinto because a 302 in a Mustang II used conventional headers.
I ran stock 289 exhaust manifolds. The driver's side was installed upside down so that it exited towards the front and didn't interfere with the clutch linkage. Then a custom 180* exhaust pipe got the gases pointed to the rear again. Was a fun car with a TopLoader 4-speed and 8" rear with 3.25 gears. All pulled out of my Maverick.
