I'm confused about the helmet rules. I thought EVERYONE had to use a helmet when drag racing. I can't find the info on my track's site anymore, but they are an NHRA track, and here's what I found on the NHRA website ( just noticed the last line which I bolded. I did email them a couple minutes ago ): " Do I need a helmet, and if so, what kind? A helmet is required for the driver of any car or truck running 13.99 seconds or quicker in the quarter mile, and for the rider of any motorcycle. Most drivers can use a helmet meeting SNELL M85, M90, M95, SA85, SA90, SA95 or K98 specifications. Professional category and some alcohol burning vehicles require an SA rated helmet. It is important to note that the helmet rating must be designated on a tag INSIDE the helmet, or sewn to one of the helmet straps. The designation stenciled on the exterior of the helmet is insufficient for NHRA technical inspection. Also, some tracks require a helmet on ALL drivers, so check in advance. Your best bet would be to just buy the best helmet you can afford, no matter how fast you're going. Even if you're slower than 14.00 ET, just having it in the car at tech inspection is a good way to get on the tech inspector's good side. NHRA stands for No Hot Rods Allowed:16suspect
I would wear one all the time (when racing). Especially if you bracket race. Cause you never know when you might get paired up against a really fast car. Hate to think about anything bad happening, but you never know and its better to be prepared. Remember: If you are going to error, error on the side of overkill!
John's right...rule or no rule...wear the helmet...I was running test and tune one night and if I hadn't had a car length on this idiot in an S-10 I woulda been toast. As it was he hit my gaurd rail and his truck was totaled.
mav 5946 is right. when you go to a track and the classes are electronics and non electronics you may be running a guy in a 135 or higher car. your a long way out before he even starts. if your doing 100mph at the finish line he's gonna fly by you. if he has a problem his safety equipment is not going to help you. every so many years the helmet rules are updated. i wouldn't go with any helmet less than a 95.
Just remember you only have one melon! why not protect it! I'm in favor of everyone's own choice but for me SAFETY is everything. after being an EMT for 10 years and working at the Nascar and NHRA drag races you come to appreciate the little things. I wear a full driving suit and helmet, your worst fear is fire, by being safe you can buy your self some time if something bad were to happen, some tracks have little or no safety personel and you have to be prepared, just my .02$ worth. wayne
