i dont know what will be better to keep my car original and keep my old 250 with just 80,000 miles on it and just build on it to be lighter and faster or find a 302 or bigger to drop in. if i keep the 250 what should i do to upgrade it?????(i know how to redo everything on a car but the engine lol) im 17 and im rodoing the whole maverick bodywork and interior work but keeping it close to original
If you wan't performance, do the 302. It can be done with a 250, but very pricey due to the poor design of the 250 (integral intake/head design). I wouldn't worry too much about it being close to original. Originally these were econobox grocery getters that cost $2000 new. There's definitely room for improvement over what Ford did for cheap in the 70s.
I would keep the 6,since it can have a great advantage, but then the intake is right on top of the manifold so you would need aftermarket parts ,I'm doin the same thang,I'm keeepin my inline six 250 also lol
im thinkin of keepin the 250 I6 an building it up, cuz its something different an dont hear of many people doing...cuz i think it'd be cool to have a 4 door beafed up inline 6 cuz it'll defintily be different but thats just my
Just get the 6 running good for now, and put away some money for the swap. As much as some people like them, 6's aren't that exciting when you open the hood. Any money spent on upgrading it, will be less you have for a V8 swap.
might not be much to look at, but when you beat the imports its well worth it haha buddy has a v6 camaro that has actually beat alot of v8s...to each his own though
My car is a stock 250, also. The 302 is much more inexpensive to build up, but you can build the six, if you want to! Here's just an example I saw online.
A straight 6 Maverick, is a far cry from a V6 Camaro...My wife's 2010 V6 Escape has as much horse power as my 5.0L Mustang did in 1988, I wouldn't be surprised if it would beat my brother-in-laws Camaro. I'd love to see a 38 year old 250 beat a new Honda..
You can build the six with 10:1 compression, a Ford 2100 2 barrel carb on a modified log (stock) manifold and stock head using 289 valve springs, retainers and keepers, cam with 214 - 220 duration and .450 - .480 lift and get close to 300 hp at the flywheel. The head can use some port work in the pockets and it would help to put in a separator in the 3-4 exhaust passage. Balancing is relatively inexpensive and headers can be had in several configurations. The log manifold will not hold you back below 5500 rpm if you mill the carb inlet (on the manifold) to an oval that matches the carb bores. Paul
I have been modifying my wife's 250 a little at a time. I have a 5.0 liter Mercury Capri RS, but I like her car better! There are alot of options for these motors for both performance and looks. http://classicinlines.com/products.asp?cat=10 http://www.cliffordperformance.net/...?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=CP&Category_Code=F200 http://www.jegs.com/i/Offenhauser/750/5970/10002/-1?parentProductId=764102 Here are some actual dyno results from classicinlines: http://classicinlines.com/dynoroom.asp Best bang for the buck- definately a V8 swap, but if you want something "different" keep the 6! Line up 10 Mavericks, 9 w/ 302's and 1 with a modded inline 6, see who has more people looking under the hood!
Thanks guys I'm still not sure what I'm gonna do but iv been reading the classic inline website and they have upgrades and stuff like my stock inline is fast I went 115 up a hill with my buddie and I in my car that's like 580lbs and my other friend in a eclipse 4cyl with just him I smoked his ass iv gone 120 by myself on 288 I taped it I know that's sounds like pushing my engine but its strong. But nothing beats a the power V8 like my friends maverick has the 302 and it flys ill leave mine in the dust
Oh, yeah, don't forget the (7) main bearings securing the crank! You can abuse these bottom ends! Build the 6!!!!!!
