My 69 1/2 Maverick has a T5 in it and it was put in before I bought it. My brakes were shot so a rebuild of the original brakes has been done and being back on the road my clutch began slipping. After tearing it down here's what I have, world class T5 trans, @9 inch pressure plate and disc, unknown flywheel, looks like original open end fork, has a 65 Mustang GT throw out bearing with a broken clip, the bearing was in the bell housing which was maybe why I had to adjust it so far out before it began to slip ? It has the original manual linkage with springs so maybe that's my problme, it seemed to work a little while with manual linkage. Anyone have ideas on what I should do with this. I bought a new throwout bearing to fit the fork and the pressure plate and disc look kinda new, the flywheel surface is smooth with no ring trims at all, just one big smooth surface facing the pressure plate so I was thinking maybe the guy befoe me put that in backwards. Anyone input would help, thanks.
After further inspection it looks like the valve cover gasket leaked oil at th rear of the engine, which allowed some of it to get into the clutch assembly because the flywheel had some oil sludge on the sides, was greasy feeling and the clutch plate needed to be cleaned. I cleaned both up with brake cleaner so just hoping it all goes together fine and grips good after being put back together. Has anyone had this problem, the valve cover on a 200 ci leaks oil down to your bell housing oiling the clutch and making it slip ? Oh and of course I replaced the broken throw out bearing.
If the clutch friction material had oil on it and a good amount of it...its done...they absorb the stuff...just like brake linings getting brake fluid on em.Clean em off...dry em... use em and the fluid comes out of the material polluting the friction surface...again...you may get lucky depending on how bad/long the leak has been there...good luck.
