i bought a 302 i was told came from a 1969 mustang. it came with a c4 supposedly from the same car, The starter is correct to the 157 tooth flexplate but the flexplate that came with the engine, was the large one and would not fit the c4 bell housing. (the flexplate was not bolted to the engine) I bought the correct flexplate and it all works well. the large flexplate had markings on it leading me to believe it came from a wrecker, but i want to be sure the flexplate I bought and the harmonic balancer match up. how do i identify if my harmonic balancer is matched to the externally balanced, 157 tooth flexplate. thanks for your time.
If the harmonic balancer came with the engine it could go with either the 157 or the 164 flexplate as long as the flexplate balance is 28 oz. The flexplate has to fit the small or large bellhousing. Also the motor pate is different for the 2 flexplates. The starter is the same.
IF you are questioning the weight of the balancer and flexplate you can get an idea from looking at the size of the weights if you cant find a part number stamped on them. The 28oz balancer will have a 1/3 of the back side with a built in weight. the 50oz balancer has about 1/2 of the back filled with weight. The flexplates would need something to compare too. The 28 oz is closer arouns 2-3" and the 50 oz is about 4". Once the weight is right then like Don said the size is determined by the bell size. Most C4 will be the 157 tooth.
