i did the 1 wire gm alternator conversion. i removed the silver box mounted on the pass. side shock mount. i have the wire from the alternator running to the batt post on the starter relay. i have the yellow wire with the fusible link on the same post. when i turn the key, the car starts and runs only until i let go of the key. i have power to the coil when i have the key turned on the neg terminal (red wire) but it pulses on and off very quickly. there is no power to the poss. (green wire) what the heck? i want to drive this thing. what gives? my best guess is the silver box i removed on the passenger shock tower but i really do want to be rid of that thing. i run a full gauge set so i don't need idiot lights so by understanding is that the silver box is no longer needed. any guesses?
With the key in the ON position you should have power to the coil+. Did you remove the DSII box? only the regulator is not needed.
dsii box is the one under the windshield washer fluid bottle? that one is still there. am i thinking of the right box?
That is your voltage regulator so you're good. You CAN get rid of that. Do you have a wire on both of the small terminals on the solenoid?
Check and see if you may have forgotten to reattach a wire to your starter relay, when you hooked up your new alternator. The ones with the fuse links can fall off and hide themselves very neatly in the wiring harness. I have had that happen before when I changed the + battery cable!
If the wires fell off the solenoid it wouldn't crank, there is another problem here. here is a basic wiring diagram so you can check voltages to the ignition components:
