hey guys figured i would give this a whirl. i know that alot of people have different views on timing. i was just wondering what you guys would time my car at. it has a 73 351W in it. edel. performer+ cam and intake, KB flat tops bored .30 over. stock ignition except accel super stack and electronic distributor conversion. the factory setting is 6 degrees over TDC @ 600 RPMs. thanks guys!
He is talking about total timing...Set the initial at 10 Deg with total at 30 at 3000 RPM and gradually increase it from there till it falls on its face or starts to ping(spark knock) Once it does either, back it off in 2 deg increments till you find a spot where its happy. Really should dyno the thing to properly set the timing curve and fuel enrichment but, This will get you in the ball park.
different distributors have different amounts of timeing advance and different curves for the advance. you want the total advance to be around 34*. this is a very good place to tune from. once you have done this you can check what the timing is at idle. now you will know what timing adjusmets you make at idle will do to the timing when at full advance.
i see. well i know a place that does dyno tuning. im putting it on a timing light tommorow and next time i get a chance i will run over to the garage and have them tune it. never thought of that thanks.
Depending on your cam I think Bryant is pretty close to good starting point for you. I'm all in at 2,200 but that how I built mine to run.
your name implyes that your force fed. do you have supercharger, turbo or nitrous? if so you will want to not run so much advance. basicly take away one degree of advance for every pound of boost or 2 degrees for every 50 hp of nitrous
