okay so I have a 1970 maverick that has no motor or transmission. I want to put a 302 in it but I'm confused on if The 302 needs to be a certain year or not. and then what transmission i need to get for the 302
Welcome to the site from northeast Ohio!!!! Any year 302/5.0L will fit. I would install a roller cam engine. Just my preference. Do you want a standard transmission or automatic? Which transmission was previously in the car? Whichever type was previously installed would more than likely be the easiest to re-install.
Oh okay it was a standard but I was leaning more towards an automatic. How hard would it to be to make it a automatic?
Let's start with the transmission first before moving on to the differential. What is your ultimate goal for your Maverick; street car, autocross, street /strip car, race only? Was your car originally a 302 car or six cylinder. with four lug wheels?
It was a six cylinder. I'm not really trying to do any racing but I would like it to have some power. It was my great grandfathers and he bought it new off the lot in 1969 so it's more of a sentimental thing.
... it would be nice if you could find a v8 mav/comet donor car. this way you could have the v8...auto...and maybe 5 lug swap parts. sounds like a project...
Before getting started on swapping in a drivetrain, what condition is your Maverick? Is rust an issue? What condition is the front suspension based on mileage, observation and shaking things up a bit? Front suspension or body work is easiest without an engine and tranny in the car. Detailed pictures would be good!!!
