Saw this today at a local show and thought I share it with the Mopar fans on the board. It's a '69 Charger 500...1 of 392 made for the street
Sweet car no doubt. However I am not a fan of that back window. 68-70 Chargers were using a recessed flat glass with trailing roof pillars that looked much better in my opinion, but caused air turbulance at the racetrack. "The Charger 500, with a Coronet grille and a flush rear window, was built by Creative Industries; 500 were sold in accordance with NASCAR rules. The main reason for the Charger 500 was to eliminate aerodynamic problems that hurt it in comparison to Ford's lower-power but more slippery racing models.Chrysler had an ace up their sleave, though: the product of extensive wind tunnel testing, the Charger Daytona included a massive rear spoiler and an aero nose. No other car could match it for top speed (200 mph), with its standard 440 and optional Hemi. Its looks, notable today, were not appreciated in 1969. " Here is a 69 R/T "Ford specifically developed the fastback Torino for aerodynamics in NASCAR, and this car was the first to hit over 190mph at Daytona." Dodges answer: the Charger Daytona. In addition to the nose cone and rear wing the Daytona Charger received the more aerodynamic flush mounted rear window. Click picture below for the story
I remember the first time I saw a charger 500 back in the late 70's. I love the 68-70 chargers. Thanks for the pic,, gorgeous car.
A couple of weeks ago, I went to MO to check out a big block Dart a guy was selling......it was decent, a street car with a 440 swapped in place of the original 318.... but, in his garage,.....an all original, 77,000 mile genuine '67 Hemi Charger, silver with red interior....according to him, documented the ONLY '67 silver/red Hemi automatic Charger. Not my favorite body style, but who cares when it's an original low-milage 1-of-1 Hemi Charger? I tried to take some pics, but it was in the back of his shop, and the @#&%!! flash wouldn't work. Looked like this diecast model....except no vinyl top .
A friend of mine from high school was a big Mopar lover. His first car was a Charger. Later he decided to build this Daytona replica during the Pro Street Era.
I owned and daily drove a 1969 Hemi Charger R/T. 4speed baby. It was without a doubt the most powerful and scary vehicle I have ever driven. It literally had no top end that I dared to push it to. Mine was a beater but real and was primered with mismatched panels and matching numbers drivetrain/unibody. Sort of like Joe Dirts car but originally blue and not rusty. Very loud and shaky thing but man was it full of horses. I drove it everyday everywhere like it was a car or something and some guy in a suit was reading my VIN on his cellphone as I left a store buying smokes, he asked if it was my car and gave me a dirty look when I said it was and that I drove it daily. He offered me cash and didn't even drive it home, we signed the title on the hood, he called a rollback, had it towed and I took a bus home with $15k in cash in my pocket. I love telling that story to MOPAR guys. Apparently a 69 Hemi Charger R/T is one of the top 5 MOPARS of all time.
