The floor shift steering column I just picked up had a deluxe steering wheel with wood grain pad. Only problem is it was black and I wanted to put it on my 74 and have the steering wheel match the LDO woodgrain dash panel I am installing. Took it apart and the plastic housing for the horn strips was shot. The original one in my standard 74 wheel was perfect but quite a bit different than the one required for the wheel with the woodgrain insert. Did a lot of trimming and shaping with a dremel and got it to fit pretty good .. I had to paint the inside strip saddle to match my steering wheel ... Here's a pic of it drying ...
Looks good. I just picked up a complete horn pad like that in the junkyard yesterday. It is in super shape. Only problem is it is dark olive green. So I will have to take it apart and paint it too.
The Deluxe wheel is done ... I originally painted it with Saddle colored Rustoleum .. after 3 days it still was tacky ... guess it was a vinyl thing. Bought some vinyl paint today and it was dry in 15 minutes. I only had to paint the center section that has the emblem in it. The rest of the pad is from the original standard wheel. I don't like the kickpanel with the speaker mounted on it and it's totally the wrong color - painted it before I found the saddle brown. I have since bought some thin flush mount speakers and a set of original Maverick kick panels with the speaker grill. They'll go in this weekend.
Looks great. I always liked that wheel, it is the one that came on the Sprints. Like a dumbass, I threw my perfectly good one away many years ago.
The wheel and interior are the same as my car....I like the wheel also. What is a good cleaner to use on it, mine has some grease spots? Todd
