    being it's a '76 you could have the 250.
if this is true then you can run your trans. behind a stock 302. JMO

That 250 puts out some pretty good power.

Post your vin number up here and I bet someone can figure it out for you. I would guess that the vin number contains the engine size.

Or, post a picture and let someone see what it is. Someone will know just by looking.

I have a 302 so will not be able to help here.

Definitely is the 250 engine. The L is your engine code. And yes, you can keep the same tranny if you go up to the 302 engine.
    T - 6-200 - 1 bbl - 78-81 Horsepower
    L - 6-250 - 1 bbl - 78-90 Horsepower
    F - 8-302 - 2 bbl - 143 Horsepower

To answer your questions; the next size up is a 302. it is a factory bolt-in job with all the related parts. With a moderate build you can get 300 - 350 HP out of it. The C4 transmission will bolt right up to the 302 but if you build the engine you will have to make some mods to the C4 in order for it to handle that extra HP. At least 5 clutches in the direct drum and a good kit (TransGo 40-2) in the valve body. I would direct you to the "Tech Articles" forum and the "How to Hot Rod Your C4 Automatic" thread. It contains a do-it-yourself list of mods. You can always Email me for help with it.
