There is a hole in the dashboard of my `72 Maverick that I have no idea why its there. Its on the passenger side about the same height as the emblem but further down from it.Its squared off but uneven. One side is taller than the other.Looks very factory.Small, maybe an 1 1/2" loong, and a quarter to a half-inch high.Anyone have any ideas???

It is for a seatbelt light. They were in 72s only.

I just went out and looked.....my 1972 Maverick doesn't have this seat belt light. It also has the early style rear kick panels with the non-retractable seatbelts....like a 1971. It was built in October of 1971.

That is correct, it only came with the retractable seatbelts which were later in the year. But still, 72 was the only year the light was in the dash.

Mine has a light there that comes on when you turn on the "sport lamps" on a 72 grabber (y)

My '72 had the hole also and boy did it bug me. I had no idea what it was until I came across the attached photo on the internet of another car. Luckily a couple of weeks ago I managed to find one at a swap meet for $2. The letters are worn a little but at least it fills the hole.

On the yellow 72 that I just sold...it had this light in the dash. It still worked. If you put the car in gear while it was running...the light would stay on and the buzzer would buzz until you put your seat belt on (or pull it out a little).

    $2 was a steal! :bananaman

I bought one off ebay the other week and it went for $43
It is in like new condition, might even be NOS. Bad thing is it also went into a Mustang in 72 and it is a hard part to find. I grabbed it because my hope of finding a used one around here was next to nothing. Easy way to fix up those bad letters is with a white tire crayon. Just wipe it across the letters and clean off the face. After it dries it will look like new.

O.K. I thought all grabbers had this light that came on when you turned on the driving lights in the grill, mine doesn't have any letters on it but is hooked to the toggle switch that turns on the lights,is this not factory?

If the toggle switch has a bezel that says 'sport lamps' i believe it's factory

The 71 and 72 factory Grabbers had a toggle switch mounted just to the right of the radio, through a bezel that read "Sport Lamps" I dont believe there was any inside indicator to let you know the sport lamps were on. In 73 the sport lamps disappeared because the grill lights became the run & turn signal lights.

Hey Fearmont, I have an extremely nice spare seat belt lamp light that I could be coaxed out of for the right price. Email me at Mavaholic@aol.com if interested. On a scale of 1-10, this would be an 8-9. I bought an NOS a few years ago It costs me almost $50. But when ya gotta have it, ya gotta have it.

A friend and I took apart a '72 Maverick last winter that was special ordered. It was a 4 door with the Grabber grill and even had the sport lamp switch, bucket seats and a floor shifter...oh and the Grabber spoiler, but I don't recall the light on the dash...but then I never would have thought twice about it anyway. He knew the original owners...I'd think it must have been quite rare. It was in really good shape with a factory 302 with only 78,000 miles. He bought it for the engine and the rear...I got as many parts as I could pull before the wreaker showed...too bad.
