Got a nice Maverick hood from Jim the other day. Gonna have a shop cut a hole to scoop it out. Any ideas on what scoops would look good and mean? Found this, but the pics are gone and the gallery was slim pickings http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?t=22605&highlight=hood+scoop&page=2 Future paint will probably be black with two red racing stripes down the middle. Guessing this would affect how wide of a scoop I'd want. Debated asking the shop to fab one up and weld it on... Good Idea, Bad idea? I like it mean!
Do you just want it to look cool??? or do you want it to actually function to force fresh/cool high pressure air into your carb???
Both.... do I have to choose? Looking cool is more important - I'll be honest There are other ways to get fresh air in if I need it. These two are pretty mean looking http://www.writeups.org/img/inset/Blade_Snipes_Charger_h.jpg http://www.diecastxchange.com/forum1/uploads/1217434753/gallery_743_13_32953.jpg This one shows the type of stripes I'd eventually want. http://pi.b5z.net/i/u/453686/i/2010_With_Hood_Scoop_ezr_i2.JPG
Those are T/A Scoops and are just barely tall enough off the hood to get high pressure air. Definitely cool though... May look good on a Mav since the leading edge of the scoop should match the contour of the stock hoods raised center "Bulge" But...Any one who has a good memory will see it and Think "Mother Mopar" LOL...You could really confuse people who allready think you have a nice Vega, Camaro, Nova, Mustang. A cowl induction style hood will get you nice high pressure air but then you have the whole Chevy thing going on. Its gonna come down to which you think looks best/fits your preference. Your right though, there are plenty of other ways to get fresh cold dense air into the engine. Good luck man!!
Thanks dude! I used to be in love with the 6" cowl look, but not so much anymore. I'm in my late 20's, going sans emblems. No one my age knows what to think of my car haha. Gonna put an obnoxious rear spoiler on and do a hood scoop - maybe reclaim my youth and some hotties while I'm at it. I'm not cheesy enough to do it if it's not functional, but I'm definitely not doing it for performance. Thanks again for the input!
yea, that's about the style I'm looking for. Maybe in a 3" tho. The boss's have a taper on the front of them?
Harwood has all kinds, I run the Aero style and it is hard to see on the street but, definatlya head turner. Go Big or stay in the Garage, I say but then again I have a 472 in Big brother and a 6 in Little bro.
It really depends on the "look" you are going for. Road racing? Then the Mopar T/A scoop isn't a bad idea. IF it's drag racing, decide the era and go for it. If you want to convey muscle, look at a shaker scoop or Boss. It needs to match the look you are going for. Don't build a slammed corner carver and put a 9" aero pro stock scoop on it. Stay with a theme. Mine is true to the original 1970 Pro Stock car I am recreating. SPark
Good points! Thanks for the advice! The car will only be driven on the street, so I'll have to be able to see... You think having the metal shop fab one up would cost alot more than buying a pre-made one off ebay or somewhere? 3" give or take looks like the height I'm going for, but not sure how wide it should be if racing stripes were going to be added later. Does it matter?
Here's a few I found on ebay that are kinda the style I'm looking for, but hard to know what they'd look like on the car... Wonder if there's a local place that has scoops I can test fit. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Early-Ford-...Parts_Accessories&hash=item2c62830cda&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-Speedwa...Parts_Accessories&hash=item3cd0b0d04a&vxp=mtr http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-B...Parts_Accessories&hash=item4d0c40abe0&vxp=mtr These look kinda kewl too... http://www.ebay.com/itm/Universal-F...Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ac3ba1228&vxp=mtr
Check out Speedway Motors offerings. They make several, the glass is thick and the finish is good. SPark
