well, i will be doing the V8 conversion to my mav shortly, and i was debating on using a mechanical or electric fuel pump (the engine is a 5.0 HO from my 88 mustang gt) and it has the timing cover with the fuel pump block off plate, and i was just curious how i would go about hooking up an electric fuel pump to my car(it will be carb'd due to fuel injection problems that will be sought out later and eventually converted back) so i was curious what i would have to do to convert to an electric fuel pump...as in return lines, would an electric fuel pump flood my engine, or do i need a fpr...i have no idea where to start, gimmie someplace to start guys
its not hard at all. some fuel pumps need a fuel press regulator, some dont. it depends on the pump that you use. the hardest part is where are you going to put the pump. they are usually mounted in the rear near the fuel tank. you just need to take the fuel line off the tank and run it to the pump. is a good idea to put a prefilter inline before the pump to keep any junk from going through the pump. then just put hose from the pump to the stock fuel line. then run a hose from where the hard line enters the engine compartment to a fuel filter and a fuel pressure regulator if you use one then to the carb inlet. to wire it up is simple. its a good idea to use relay to provide power.
I did my 331 with a Mr Gasket 12D pump. It's mounted on the frame rail just forward of the rear axle. No regulator needed. I spliced the factory fuel line where the pump is to plumb it.
...and as always, my question is... "why do you think you need one"? ...H P 289, BOSS 302, 396, 409, 428, 429, 454, 460, 472 and 492... ...had mechanical fuel pumps...... ...Frank...
I sold an 87 5.0 from a TBird to a friend and he installed it in a 66 Mustang he said the fuel pump eccentric was on the cam. He installed a front cover from a standard 302.
Earl, what year is your engine? does it have a mechanical pump? my engine is a '91, it has a mechanical pump... ......
it is from an 88 mustang gt with an electronic fuel pump, i have two reasons why i want the electronic fuel pump 1. i have the timing cover with the fuel pump block off plate. 2. i will be installing fuel injection later on
make sure the pump you use can do both...carb/injection... now back to topic... "how do i install an electric fuel pump to my carb'd 302?" ...:Handshake...
there substantial differences between a elec pump for fuel injection and carberation. you can if your trying to preprep for fuel injection put a return style system in and use a pressure regulator able to go down to 5 psi. it can be costly to do.
My 331 has a late 80's timing cover with the fuel pump boss, but it's not unplugged for the pump. The bolt holes are drilled and tapped. I put a chrome pump block off plate over the pump lever opening just for looks. I have another cover off an 88 Crown Vic that had no boss for the pump. Thus the reason to run an electric pump.
