I trying to remove paint from a filler neck seal and I'm not having much luck with WD40. I'm afraid to use paint remover, acetone or brake fluid thinking it will deteriorate the rubber. Anyone have a tried and true remedy?
Hi Jeff - old body shop trick was to coat Vasoline on that paint before going home and then the next day it would be softened up enought to gently scrape off. Now I learned this trick way back in the stoneage of car paints. New paints, I have no idea if it works but it can't hurt the rubber. A little OOOO steelwool comes in handy too. Can use the steelwool and that WD40 together. If that all fails, the supply shops have a bumper stripper in a spray can that is safe for rubber.
lacquer thinner/acetone works well just dont soak it..put it on a rag and wipe it down..but for less than $20 id just buy a new one
From my experience I know they are hard to find used in good condition. Everyone I seen in the junkyard is either torn or the only thing left was the outer ring. Melvin’s Classic Ford Parts is in the next town over and I can get one from them for $22 and save a few dollars on shipping and install it the same day.
My NPD filler neck seal only lasted 1 year before it dry rotted into junk, and the car wasn't even out of the garage yet...
I think brake parts are made from a different kind of rubber. Kinda like different kinds of plastic. I notice today that WD40 is working but it's not in a big hurry.
After spending a few nights with WD40 and a little orange flavor Gojo the seal looks like a different guy ...
