I am changing my points to a pertronix EI on my 72. I will also be replacing the coil and have seen aftermarket ones with 40-45k output. Just wondering what a stock coil puts out and if the difference is noticeable between the two.

If you're not running high compression, leaner mixtures, very wide plug gaps, or serious modifications, the stock coil is sufficient. The peak KV is almost never realized during normal driving. The petronix by itself is a great modification.

If your coil is good, keep it, even if you upgrade. Aftermarket coil quality can be questionable at best.

Stock cannister style coils, produce approximately 30,000 volts.

if you want to know exactly...pull the coil wire from the dist, stick it to your tongue and have someone turn the engine over. tho this way you may not remember how many...:Handshake

The mav is gone but i'm still here!
What do you mean by "stock" ?

Like the original one that came with the car, or a parts store replacement?

Also stock as in a "points" coil or "electronic coil"?
    I don't know if there's a difference but they're marked differently.
