I need to put the old one to the side for storage, but I don't want it to continuously drip on the floor. How can I get it completely empty? Converter is removed and draining. I just need to get the actual trans dry so I can store it and do some work on it later.
If it's just leaking a bit out of the rear tailshaft, I usually put a heavy duty babby on it and duct tape it tightly. Anything else and you might just have to put a small drip pan underneath it. When I put a tranny or a block off to the side I put it on one of the small movers dolly that HF sells. That way I can roll them around if they get in the way.
The question is "where is it NOT leaking from?" Got the baggy on the tailshaft. Leaking at the pan, the shift linkage, I don't know where else. This transmission looks like a sponge with fluid coming out all over it. It has been a nightmare driving and owning this for the past 6 years, with the leaks getting worse all the time.
Also, I need to lay it upside down so I can pull out the valve body and I don't want to have to swim out of the garage when I am done.
Good luck. Face it your going to make a mess if you open up a tranny. Have lots of rags, stay dry and I use cardboard as an operating table.
Aww, man. That isn't the answer I wanted to hear... I been mopping up Type F for way too long. Guess I better get busy, install the rebuilt one, and put this all behind me.
Ok, took tailshaft housing off, and got a HUGE splash on the floor. Had to use one of the wife's full-size bath towels on that one, and a pair of jogging pants. Then held it "up" in the bucket for a few minutes, and then laid it "down" on a large plastic pan. I still cannot believe how much Type F is in these things...
i found out how to completly empty it the hard way...i was lifting the motor and tranny out as one piece, i figured most the fluid was already out until the tranny tipped slightly and there was one huge mess...i spent hours cleaning with kitty litter
