i just got this car and it has some rust underneath the window trim. how do i remove the window trim and then the rust? http://mmb.maverick.to/attachment.php?attachmentid=44477&d=1283016128 http://mmb.maverick.to/attachment.php?attachmentid=44478&d=1283016128
To get rid of that rust, you'll need a spot blaster, or a grinder...and hopefully you don't end up with a hole, the first one looks a little scary. It's not a common rust spot...
It's not that easy.(I shouldn't have posted that) Take your time, get some books and do some reading, even search around the net, and learn what's involved. Bad body work is worse than rust any day. Even 0000 steel wool, will help to remove the staining. But like everyone else has said, take your time, check the brakes, replace anything that's old and crusty. It's not a race to finish the car.
The trim on the to drip rail just "rolls" off. Start at either end and gently pry it up and slowly work it off. You can use trim tools (Harbor Freight has them in plastic or metal) or I found that an old style bottle opener works well.
After you fix the drip rail rust, what do you use for sealer? Isn't it a putty type sealer? Got to fix mine.
what about this rust. the soonest i would paint the car is probably going around christmas if not then the car would get painted early next summer. id like to address the rust sooner than later, i don't want it getting any worse...
Unless you are prepared to do it RIGHT and do it ALL from the get go....you will be wasting your time. Save up your money and get the entire car painted at once.
And go in and talk to Maaco and see what they suggest you do. I would get a small sandblaster (you can get one from Eastwood) and sandblast the small surface rust areas.
Would this one work? http://www.harborfreight.com/garage-shop/abrasive-blasters/portable-abrasive-blaster-30979.html
What type of media would you use in the blaster. I see it says glass bead or sand. What "Grit" would be optimal.
