Hey everybody. I'm a recent college grad with a wife, a kid, and ridiculous student loan. I am also cursed with an appreciation fine automobiles. I've had my eyes on a Maverick or Comet for a few years, so I've joined to get more information about what I might be able to do with the budget I've got. I'm driving an old Hyundai right now, and I've had to replace blown head gaskets, c/v joints, a starter, etc, and I figure if I'm going to do all this damn work I might as well be doing it underneath a car I actually WANT. I'll start a more specific thread somewhere else when I have a better idea of what my options are, and how much (or how little) money I'll have to spend. Thanks in advance, -PotentialBuyer
Greetings! Nothing worse than having to work on a car that has no soul ... or putting $$$$s and time into a vehicle that you just don't have any love for. It sounds like this would be your daily driver. The best advice I can give you is to get one that is as complete and nice as possible. There are a lot of Mavs and Comets out there ... don't just settle for the first one you run across. It is easy to get bogged down in a car that just needs "a few things". Do a search for how to check for a leaking cowl ... common problem with many cars of the era ... leads to rotten floors, etc. Also, getting one with disc brakes is pretty important if you are going to share the road with modern cars. Not a deal-killer if you find a nice one that has drums .... easy conversion, but figure that into the plan.
Thanks for the welcome, gentlemen. Yeah, whatever I get will have to be a daily driver, or at least be able to fake it. So my daydreams of a 408 stroker with aluminum cleveland heads is out the window, and now I'm trying to convince the wife she'd like maybe a nice 4-door Mav/Comet with a lightly warmed over 302 and some styling mods.
