What can cause this?Last year made some upgrade in motor (new cam kit lifters, springs)new stock oil pump, new piston rings, shawed and ported stock heads. About 60-70 race starts in two seasons all together. Some cruising, some interstate all together 3000miles. Cam is cranecam Z-268-2, valve lift int.490/exh.504. Oil 15w-40, after cam break in, oil changed two times. I have to admit that the engine was many times between 5500-6000rpm( cam spec is 5600 max rpm, 6200 valve float). Reason is stock gearbox(without shiftkit)so when I change gear to the next, it stuck in same gear for some time and then change. Now is the tik-tik...noise. Can this might be the reason?
Should I need to change the lifters or is there any repair method?

    Thanks!

you need to make sure it is a lifter problem. i have also had the ticking sound when a header came loose and blew out the exhaust gasket. i'd make sure everything is tight. :)

Mine makes a ticking sound like you mention. I am pretty sure it is a gasket leak on the #8 cylinder of my header gasket. Sounds just like lifter tapping.

I posted a sound clip up here and someone immediately said "dude, fix that exhaust leak!"

Yeah, I now the different, I'm listen with the metal stick. And with different rpm, the noise will go and then come back again.

Could be a lot of things. You don't describe your heads. If they have press-in studs could be one of them's coming loose. Stock-type pivot ball rocker arms can wear and make noise, slightly bent pushrod, flat spot on a lifter base or cam lobe (I'm assuming you have a flat tappet cam)... Could just be a lazy lifter that takes more oil pressure to get pumped up.

It'd be pretty easy to pull the covers and check the valve train, ay? You might find a bent pushrod, or a broken spring or rocker, or that half inch boxed end wrench you haven't been able to locate. ;)

edit: I see Barry posted while I was typing.

I had a "tick-tick" noise for a long time that end up being a bad pushrod. The very end of it (under the rocker arm) had broken and was wearing away, leaving too much space between the end of the pushrod and the rocker arm, thus the "tick-"tick".

Yes you can try adjusting the lifters 1/4 turn and see if the noise stays away.

I found a bent push rod once.

Just after my timing chain broke and then all hell broke loose

Yea, me too. This came out of the 250 that was in my '74 Grabber. No wonder it was miss firing.

On a side note, the pic in your signature is absolutely hilarious. :rofl2:

On yet another side note, I'm back in the States until December 3rd, Barry. I got in Houston on the 20th of October. Maybe my laptop still has jet lag.
