can anyone tell me how to i.d. if possible the c-4's that would have the 5 clutch pack drums without haveing to pull out and tear down. would it be more likely to be in larger cars and or trucks . or would the c- 4's that came in mavericks and comets have them. would they be behind 6 cyclinder or v/8 cars or ramdom both? any help would be appreciatted. if they had tag or year or whatever be lot easier than tearing down to check again thanks for any help
The C4s that were used behind the 240, 250, 300 sixes and all the V8s are built with 5 clutches in the forward drum and 4 clutches in the direct drum. All C5s have the same clutch arrangement regardless of what engine they were used with. To change a C5 to a C4 all you do is use the C4 bell housing, converter and valve body. You do have to use the Bronco filter and a tube that is 1 inch deeper than the C4 filter to keep the deeper pan. Any Car or truck with the above listed engines and a C4 will have the 5/4 clutch packs and they usually have front servos that are acceptable for higher torque than the six cylinder cars. (C, H, A, or R would be the desirable servos in the order of preference) You are unlikely to find the factory "C" servo but you do occasionally see an "H" servo. The most common is the "A" sevo and it is slightly better than the "R" servo that was used in high performance C4s. Does that help?
