...really. True story. My car has been up on blocks for over a year due to a stock leaky transmission hooked up to a mildly souped up new engine. I haven't been to the track in over 2 years. And not with the new engine, and definetly not with the new transmission. Anyways, I had this dream last night where I slapped my 10.5X26 ET-Street slicks on and took it to the track. Woke up wondering how much of a difference I will notice in that 26" tire compared to the 27.x" tire I drive on daily. (255/60r15) The slicks are mounted on really light aluminum rims, and I have the 27" tires on steel cragars. About 20 lbs lighter each. What kind of difference would I see on my numbers ASSUMING I had good traction with my BFG 27-inchers? Would I even know the difference. And to answer your question...no. I have never driven on the ET-Streets. They look like a ticket waiting to happen to me.
Ticket waiting to happen?? Only if you drive it like you stole it...I drive mine all the time with M/T drag radials.
most cops dont have clue as to what the m/t is about. the drag radials dont have the white leters on it. lastly the with m/ts on the et streets quickly fades. i used them on my mustang and all the times i got pulled over they never asked about the tires.
So, regarding my question... what changes in ET and speed would I likely see? I am assuming faster 60' times. Last time I went to the strip, on the 255/60 tires and old engine, I never got to 3rd gear in the 1/8th. Since then, I have the 26" tires, a bit more motor, with roller everything and a bunch more cam. I would assume that I can get to third gear now.
Every car (combination) is different. I would think that in the 1/8th mile, your car would show improvement. In my particular case I went from a 28x9 slick to a 26x8.5 because my engine needed more "gear". The result was in the quarter mile It went 2 tenths quicker and 4 mph faster ! Needless to say I was pleased. The only real way to figure out how much (if any) the new tires will help you is to go to the track and do a direct comparison betweeen the two tire sizes.
I will have to put the battery back on a mount in the trunk, then back to the track. I am currently halfway through carpeting the trunk up, and the battery is just flopping around back there. I was wondering if it would be worth my while to even swap into the 26" slicks, but it sounds like it would be...
DEFINETELY use the slicks. Do a good burn out. but nothing overly long. just enough to heat up the tires.. air them down to about 18psi.. give or take, and that depends on track temp and how well they prepped the track.. but you will show a big improvement in the 60' times. if i had the money and the maverick i was going to get the Et streets because i heard so many good things about the compound in that tire but they are 155 each. i have also heard that when you are done racing.. air the tires back up.. since they are soo soft anyways.. and 18 is a low pressure, it can damage the tires on the road. actually.. i cant wait to see what numbers you post with that combo
Just a quick note to help clarify my above post: The car Did Not spin at all with either of the two slick sizes. The improvements I gained were just from using the smaller tires. Good luck at the track.
Yeah, I understood. Your improvements came from your car being able to get those tires turning more easily. That is pretty much the gist of this thread. Which is why I asked that we assume I am getting decent traction. I just wanted to know how the 1.5" smaller (and much lighter) tires would make it act on the track.
