Hi everyone, I'm new here! I have a 1973 Mercury Comet. I bought my car in November, and I thought it was in decent condition, but as of last month, I NEED AN ENGINE! To be honest, I have no idea how to go about looking for an engine for my car. All I know is that it is a 1972 two-door, automatic trasmission. I believe the engine the now dead engine is a v-6. I was wondering if any of you know how to go about finding an engine for my car. I am in San Diego, California, so anyone with info on how to get one close by would be VERY appreciated.
Likewise, (I would HATE to do this) does anyone know how much I could sell my car for without an engine? I would seriously hate to do this, and would rather fix it than sell it, but I need a working car. The exterior of the car is in nearly perfect condition, and the interrior is in pretty good condition, it only needs a little restroation in terms of the leather seating. And the other parts are in good working condition, as I have replaced several since I purchased the car. The only thing it doesn't have is an engine. Any idea if I could sell that? And how much it could go for?

But really... I need an engine!!

Any help any of you could offer would be so great. Thank you so much!

Well they didn't make V6's back then so your car has a straight 6. Post your VIN number and we can tell you what engine it is (assuming it's original).

As far as getting it going again, if you don't know anything about engines, I would suggest you take it to a trust worthy mechanic (if there is such a thing now days). You may find that you can repair the engine in it cheaper then buying one and paying to have it installed. If it's high mileage, you would be better off replacing the engine with a rebuilt one.

Otherwise now is the time to sell the car.

What exactly is wrong with the engine?
