ok well i put my tranny in and got my car fired up today. when i put it in reverse it started going forward:hmmm:. it did the same in all gears. now heres the good part when i shut it off I put it in neutral a couple of the gears were still ingauged. as i pushed it the car finally went in to neutral, after that the tranny started working. my question now is what caused it? could it be a sticky valve? any help/ input would be great. any ways im just trying to solve a small kink before its a big problem. thanks

It sounds like the shift linkage inside the transmission was mis-aligned. You may have forced it into position..... lucky you didn't break anything.

when hooking it up make sure the little shifter arm tab is in the first slot of the selector piston and if you can get a volunteer to run it through the gears while under the car that helps check movement all the way forward and back.

If it is working properly then leave it alone......

There are two valve bodies for the 71 and later C4s. They can interchange but one has an extra bolt to help prevent warpage.
The 64-65 C4 valve bodies are all to themselves, the 66-69 will interchange but there are differences in shift pattern. The 1970 is a manual shift valve body all to itself - you don't find many of these around anymore - they are junk! not at all for performance.
