This is a prototype 1970 Torino. The idea was to keep up with the Mopar Superbirds. Three of these were made.

If you ask me, I think that one was enough ... :rofl2:

I have seen that car in person. I think it is really neat.

A Drag-N-Fly done up "right" would be killer.

They had two of them in Atlanta last year at the Ford South show. Here's a link to some of the photos I took: http://rides.webshots.com/album/558978300SJJTnl?start=72
They had some amazing cars at that show!!! (Including the Dyno Don Maverick)

you got it all wrong, Datsuns were made to look like badass Fords. I'd rather have that car with the lights' caps on. Maybe a Maverick with those headlight caps would make it look cool.

You may just be right...I don't think the Datsun Z car came out until 74 or 76. This Ford came out around 70...

I tell you what. I had an 83 280Z and that was still, by far, the best car I EVER owned.

I had 285,000 on it when I sold it, and it still burned ZERO oil, and needed ZERO maintenance to keep it on the road. It was also still VERY fast, and could chirp in the first 4 of 5 gears (manual trans) and still got close to 30 mpg.

If I had a job at the time, I would have fixed the minor things that were wrong and kept it going (A/C-heater core had a hole and I just bypassed it with the heater hose. I didn't catch it in time causing a rusty spot on passenger floorboard, and that was just about ALL that was wrong with it!!!)

Remember the early Toyota Celica? Looked just like a miniature 70 Mustang Fastback.

Can you modify a rare modified Maverick?

I mean....take a NEW Maverick, modify it, then retail it. 40 years later somebody buys it, then decides to modify it instead of restore it???

I mean....it was modified when it was new, so now can you modifiy the modified???

    I've got a headache now. :D

240Z was out in the mid-60s...
Then came 260 and 280 versions.
The exterior stayed the same, the engines got bigger, hence the name changes. 2.4L then 2.6L, and finally 2.8L.

The King Cobra looks much better with the folding lights.
The final 'production' (all 3...) came with the open lights as in the pics.
The 'pre-production' prototypes had flush marker and turn lights, and folding headlights that were smooth to the body like Stingrays.
    Much cleaner looking.

Some interesting stuff has popped up in this post ...

Love the shots of the Ford South show, even though they let a couple of Mopars sneak in. (They were great Mopars (y)). The T-Bolt wagon was cool, as were so many others.

With headlight covers, these King Cobras were much better looking, but still, I had a 71 Torino and have always thought they were one of the best looking cars ever made. Adding all that stuff on the front wasn't an improvement, but I understand form following function.

Datsun Z cars came to the states in 69, and the first cars were a special release with a hotter motor than the more common ones after them in 70. The idea was that they would be used for racing. My buddy had one in college, and put a later cam in it to make it less high-strung. It was his daily driver and a very fun car.

Early Celicas looking like a 70 Mustang? I noticed that a bit too ... Mustang taillights, 70 Torino grille, the roofline looked a bit like Mustang fastbacks. Throw it all in a dryer, spin on high heat until it is shrunk to 4/5ths scale ... voila! Celica.

Wasn't there a Cyclone version of the King Cobra also?
