After reading many post I think that as a group we are selling ourselves short on our Comets & Mavericks. I see the day coming that they are going to sell for $20,000.oo or More. I KNOW that I wouldn't take less than $6,500.00 for it the way she sits now. After I put $3,000.00 to $5,000.00 in the engine, $1,500,00 to 2,500.00 in the tranny, $500.00 to1,500.00 on disc brakes. Sub-frame, Rear end gears, paint and interior wilI make it worth more. I get tired of people saying that a $30,000.00 car is out of line.
Everyone has OVER-DONE the Mustangs, Camaro's and Chevelle's and you can't find one of those to fix up anyways. This means that the Comet's and Mavericks are moving up to "Hot-Rod" class and they are going to keep climbing in Value. Where we live you can't find a Comet or Maverick out in a field or barn, most of them got scraped years ago. Any 30+ year old car that runs and drives as good OR better than when it was it new brings a Higher value to the car. When we add more horsepower, disc brakes and a killer paint Job to them the value goes up. This Is MY opinion, but I totally disagree that a Comet or Maverick will never be worth Much... When I drive down the street and people stop to stare, OR go to a car show and Hear "Awesome Comet" Or tooo COOL! I know that these are attention grabbing cars that will only go UP in value. "In my opinion" Phil.

Sort of like microsoft stock...Worth very little at the beginning...Those that held on to it for a while GOT RICH... I feel that these cars are on the cusp at this very moment...Its taken a long while to get to the point where our cars are appreciated/noticed for their potential... WE are visionaries waiting for the crowd to catch up to us thats all.

    We wont get rich though...

I wouldn't sell my grabber for any price, I do believe that our cars are climbing in value... I've been all over Florida and you just don't see many mavs or comets... In time the collectors will drive the price up, as they have done with other models...

think about the other cars that arnt worth what mustangs, camaros, etc. are worth. of all the different cars in the 50s ony the tri 5 chevy cars are really sought after. consider the falcon in the 60s, and lots of other cars from those times. all of those cars are not disired cars. now when you build your car super nice with lots of money into it will be worth alot more than an average comet or maverick. a junk 69 camaro can get $5000.00 in a heartbeat. a junk maverick will never get $5000.00. so yes your right that if you put a ton of money and work into a maverick it will be worth a decent amount of money but regular maverick will never be worth alot of money.

As classic cars, I believe they can only go up in value from here on out. I seriously doubt they will ever be on par with Mustangs, Camaros ,or any other highly desirable cars though. $30,000 IS out of line when factoring in current market trends. People have the right to try and sell their cars for what ever they want... weather it actually sells is a different story.

On top of that, as much as we like these cars, there are still plenty of people out there that think of them as just boring, poorly built P.O.S. 70's cars.

has anyone gotten their...time and money...out of one of these cars?
most of our cars are being built to keep...forever. collector cars are being built ...to sell.

$5000 for the junk 69 camaro is the norm. people accept that.
untill we the people that...Love...mav/comets...stop complaining about paying...$400...for a stock Grabber hood...$150 for a...spoiler set...these cars will never gain in value...they are only worth what We will pay for them...:yup:...when you put $5000 into one of these cars, you are just trying to get your money back. very seldom do you hear someone say..."that Mav/Comet is worth more than that"...most comments are..."it ain't worth that".example...WOW What a difference an opinion makes
is the junk Camaro worth $5000...to them, but not to us...
a '69 Camaro on the other hand. you pay $5000 for the car, put $5000 into it...and sell it for $15,000 +.

our cars are being built and sold to people that start every...car/parts wanted thread...with....looking for cheap ...
in the Camaro world, if they want a...stock hood...they just ask how much???
i bought my '73 for $50, delivered...that's not even at...scrap metal...price. so the seller didn't even think it would bring more for scrap...:hmmm: (it was on a rollback heading to the crusher.)

We, the Mav/Comet lovers are the ones that set the worth of these cars...:yup:
you never hear someone on Barrett Jackson say ..."the reason i paid $92,000 for that car is...i never liked it"...:D

thank you, thank you very much...:drive:...

Well said, Frank. Spoken by a person who has put a ton of money into his car, not because he expects to get the money back, but because it is his hobby and it is what he wants to do.

I have owned over 50 classic old cars, including 5 Nomads, a '69 RS Camaro conv, GTO's, and various other GM products. I own my current bunch because I like them, not because I feel they are a wonderful investment. They give me a good feeling of accomplishment to see them finished. The Mav/Comets remind me of the original '65 Mustang I drove all through my college days and are also very eyecatching in styling. However, I stand on my position that they will never reach the heights of Mustangs and other more popular cars. There might be a few exceptions. Therefore, do NOT put a lot of money in these cars because you feel you can get it back. Do it because it is WHAT you want to do with the car to enjoy it. I am not worried about what my cars will sell for, since I have no desire to sell them. My son can sell them after I am gone. He will be the one that will profit, since he has no investment in them. Just my opinion.

Personally, i don't care "what it is worth". I am building it up to have fun. Whatever money I put into mine I get back twofold in the pleasure I get driving and playing with it.

Also, I have made more friends in my short time owning this car than I EVER made in the previous 30 years.

This car has a magical abililty to draw other Maverickers out of the woodwork and bring us together for food, drinks, and camaraderie. :Handshake

And EVERY car show I have been to has had at least 3 or 4 mavericks in it. At least one being mine, one being fan2488, and usually Doug Bauer, etc.

The best thing that I like about owning a Mav is that, for the most part, no one else has one. I've only seen one other since I bought mine. When I go to car shows I have a bunch of guys coming over to talk about how they hadn't seen one in years and how the use to have one in high school. I like all types of cars, but how many mustangs do you see a year? You see alot of them. In fact they are all over the place. How man Mav's do you see? Not many. When I drive through town guys are straining their necks to get a look at my car. That's pretty darn cool!!! I paid $4500 plus about $3500 in upgrades for a kick butt car. When you think about it, that's fairly inexpensive for a collector car, so I feel like I'm the one really making out on this. I got a cool car that hardly anybody else has at a fraction of the cost!!! Most of my buddies are jealous and think I paid a fortune for my Mav. We are the smart ones here folks!!!

Back in the 70s,when Mavs and Coms were new,I liked them. Now,when an old Studebaker Lark is worth bucks,I like the Mavs-Coms even more. They`ll never probably be as popular as Mustangs, but I like my Mav better than any Mustang. What it`s worth,I could care less,I just like my car and enjoy working on it!:thumbs2:

    P.S. I like 67,68 Cougar XR7s too!

I find that most people tend to own and tinker with cars that are from their youth, especially their driving/teen years. That is why I like Mavericks. They were popular and all over the road for my entire teen years. I thought they looked cool, especially after Ford came out with the 71-73 Mustangs and the 74-78 Mustangs. Ford screwed up the Stang, but the lines for the two-door Maverick remained the same for the entire run.

During this time, Dyno Don, Gapp & Roush, Dick Brennan, etc., were dominating NHRA Pro Stock. Heck, Gapp & Roush were the first to make a 4-door car look cool as they did with the Tijuana Taxi. The baddest car in my county as 1972 Comet GT that Frank Martin (2 years ahead of me high school) built a 302 and put in a 4-speed. That white Comet with the black GT stripes, side pipes, slotted wheels, and high back bucket seats was my car idol.

I never got own a Maverick or Comet in the 70's. I never stopped dreaming of owning one. I finally bought one in 2003. I own two because they remind me of a less hassled time, remind me of my youth, remind me of racing heroes, and because I want to. If you are concerned about what Mavericks and Comet are going to be worth money wise and not what they are worth to you, then you are in this hobby for the wrong reasons. Just my two-cents.

Most people fall into Mavericks & Comets.
They found a cheap car, because they were looking for something cheap, because if they could afford something better, they would have never looked at it in the first place.
That cheapness continues..in everything that gets done to the car....
Around 20% of the Mavericks & Comets out there are somewhat presentable, the rest are highly molested, bondo'd heaps.

I don't do, what I do to my cars as a investment, I do what I do, because... that's what I want to do, and I can. It's my hobby.

I should say, that I grew up in a neighborhood full of Mavericks & Pinto's, since almost everyone worked at the St.Thomas assembly plant, I have always liked these cars. I've had one or another since 1988, and never used one for a daily driver.

The main problem is that they're only worth what someones willing to pay, and what people are willing to pay isn't close to how much we've put in them.

Dave Boyer you summed up my thoughts, except that I have always loved the styling of these cars and it is was what I wanted in 1974 and been driving them since.
