Okay, so, I pulled myself an '86 302. Got it for $50.

I plan to start from scratch with the engine. I'm upgrading from a 250 and I'd like to make a fun streetrod. I'm not looking to drag or anything like that, but I'd still like to make my friends drool (and maybe to speed a bit...)

I'd like you guys to pretend this is just a block and give me what your wishlist would be to meet my goals.

Anything. I can look for prices after you guys give me some advice and figure out the budget myself. I figure that because I'm not looking to build a drag engine I can probably swing whatever you tell me. I can buy parts as I can afford them.

No crate engines, by the way. I want this to be something me and my dad can do together. Now that I live on my own I'd like to have an excuse to spend some time with him.

if i was starting from scratch, i think i'd buy a matching kit like the ones from edelbrock. if you want to put a little pep in it, as in a 331 stroker, i'd buy a kit from someone like probe. that way you get all the matching components and usually they are a little less expensive. :)

The 331 option sounds like a cool thought. Any thoughts on options that may not be included in a kit, like headers or a carb?

hooker 6901 headers fit best! headman 88300 i think thats the part number they fit but some have said not the best

far as carb thats goin to be an arguement , some like the smaller 600 or so , but i dont have a stroker and i have a holley 750DP atop mine but mines a 351w also

good start though , nice roller block , should make deicent HP

for headers most use the hooker 6901's. there also is a hedman header that fits mavericks. i would probably go for the holley 650 only because i'm more familiar with the holleys. some others may say different. btw did you get any snow today? i was near the cardinals stadium. went in to walmart in a shirt, when ewe came out it was freezing and snowing.

Run a compression test, and if it checks out good, install an Edelbrock Performer-RPM intake manifild, Holley Streetavenger 570cfm carb, 1.7:1 Rocker arms. Duraspark distributor, clean it and and paint it up nice. It will be lively and won't break the bank...

I called my dad and he thought the 331 idea would be fun. He says he knows of a good machine shop that he'd trust with the job. And I haven't been out since this afternoon, but my friend said he saw snow at a bus stop.

    Isn't this Phoenix? o_O

I think the stroker would be good for you. Get the heads worked or buy aftermarket (world windsor jr's under a grand) I would go hyd. roller cam, keep comp. and cam in tune for pump gas, headers, Vic jr intake topped with a 650-700 vacuum secondary holley. Nice distributor, coil, valve covers and air cleaner to sparkle it all off!

Right kit on stroker with compression, cam, exhaust, you'll have a great sounding, running car. Open the hood, looks just as great with the shinies!!!

    Good Luck

I'm liking where this is headed. I knew asking you guys would be helpful for me. I had hit a snag because I've been saving for my wedding. But now that that's under control I'm looking to get back into this.
