I have a pair of unmounted bucket seats that came with a 76 maverick I purchased from searching on this forum they appear to be 71 - 72 seats but what throwing me off is the bottoms are blue and the Backs are black. Is there any way to tell if I have the correct bottoms?
Look at the passenger seat .... if the inboard side seat track is physically higher than the outboard side, the seat bottom is from 75-77 ... the cars with catalytic converters. They had to make them odd to accommodate the lump in the floor. If the areas where the seat tracks bolt up are all even with each other, you probably have earlier seats. The seat backs are very easy to swap between the years, and drivers seat backs frequently are broken by fat drivers and fast cars (... and just a lot of use ... lol) A picture would help here. If you want to use early seats, you may want to eliminate the cat hump in the floor. Some people just cut it out and reverse it ... that is assuming the catalytic convertor is long gone ...
Thanks captain I'll check that when I get home. Personally I don't like the seats I'm trying to find out if you're correct because I like to sell them or trade them for parts.
There should be a metal tag attached to one of the springs on the seat cushion. Might be able to tell exactly what they are from with the number. Micah
You have 71-72 uppers and later bottoms there. If you don't want to mod the floor in your car, I would bet that if you got replacement foam for the bottoms, you could put early Mav skins or 71-73 Mustang coupe skins on those seats, and you could use the seat tracks that you have. The replacement foam would be for the earlier seats. Mustangs in the years listed used the same foam too. In looking closer at the pic of the underside, it looks like the foam is molded right to the frame. I would bet that you can shave off the old foam from the top and sides and replacement foam would then slide onto that frame.
I have a tech article written on this. It has been an ongoing process ... http://mmb.maverick.to/showthread.php?p=818186#post818186 You might want to read it to explore a few options. I hope you don't mind that I inserted your picture in there ... it really does help tell the story to others. Installing buckets in the later cars can be a real pain, but this article can give some others some help deciding how they want to proceed.
I don't mind at all CaptainComet Let me know if you need any other pics. That's what this whole forum is all about helping others. Thanks
