I have a 77 mav w/250 engine that I am trying to get a smoother idle.I've installed a new carburator and set of plugs and wires and had a tune-up done. The shop mechanic said that my EGR valve was'nt operating properly and he thought that it was the reason for the poor idling. The EGR valve is fine,he seemed to think that the vacuum lines and thermostat play a role in proper functioning of the EGR.I have'nt got a clue as to the routing and connections of the vacuum lines.Any help would be appreciated.

It seems like all of those 250 idle like this:
dmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm du dmmmmmmmm du du dmmmmmmmmmmmm du dmmmmmmmmmmmmm du dmmm du dmmmm
That's the best way I can describe it in text anyway.
I've always been able to eliminate this with carb, vacuum, plugs and wires, etc. But it seems to come back quickly. The best thing I've seen so far is the 2 barrel conversion. Use a 2 barrel off a Mustang II or Pinto and bolt it to an adapter plate. Someone has done that to a '76 I have and it idles extremely smooth - no du-dus. (y)

    Poor Idle

ok thx. for the idling advise. It does'nt stall out so I guess I'll just live w/it like it is.Is there any place that I could go to and see a diagram of the vacuum hose connections 4 the carbuerator?

I don't have a vacuum diagram, but it's really simple on these cars. You can probably buy or make a EGR block off plate to eliminate it.
Also, use some carb cleaner and spray around the carb and vacuum hoses. Don't forget the vacuum block on the firewall and the vacuum to the modulcator (if automatic). If the engine picks up and smooths out at any time while you spray, you've found your vacuum leak.
